EL CERRITO — An 18-year-old Richmond resident suspected of driving a getaway car following a fatal shooting last month has been arrested, police said.
The shooting happened just after 12:15 p.m. on Aug. 23 in the parking lot of the Del Norte Plaza shopping center in the 11200 block of San Pablo Ave. Officers arrived to find a man suffering from at least one bullet wound near the Los Moles restaurant. He died at the scene.
Authorities on Tuesday identified the victim as 21-year-old Jakai Couch, of Castro Valley.
In a statement, police said they coordinated with regional law enforcement partners to find Jamir Buckley, the man they suspect of driving the getaway car. Police said they found him in possession of an illegal assault rifle and a high-capacity magazine. According to jail records Wednesday, Buckley remained in custody without bail at the Martinez Detention Facility on suspicion of murder.

Police already had arrested 18-year-old Jacari Gibson on Aug. 24 on suspicion of murder in connection to the same shooting.
Surveillance cameras near the scene captured footage of the suspect vehicle, but not its license plate, police said. Investigators then worked with other law enforcement agencies and used automated license plate reader technology to identify a license plate for the 2017 Nissan Maxima. The car was then placed on a statewide alert list.
Police found the car in Vallejo on Aug. 24.
Police said there were three suspects in the shooting. The investigation remains open as they continue to search for the third one.
