PITTSBURG — The driver who killed a 23-year-old woman while attempting to evade California Highway Patrol officers has been sentenced to 13 years in prison through a plea deal, records show.

Thomas Jamaar Davis Jr., 20, was originally indicted on murder charges for the March 23, 2025 crash that killed Villamalia Polina Tu’ipulotu and injured her boyfriend, Beaux Tagaloa, a UC Berkeley football player. But Davis agreed to plead no contest to manslaughter and evading charges in exchange for Contra Costa prosecutors dropping the remainder of the case.
Davis was transferred to Valley State Prison in June, records show. He was 18 at the time of the crash, which occurred after police attempted to pull him over on Highway 4 on suspicion of driving a stolen Infiniti. He allegedly sped up to more than 100 mph and got off on Railroad Avenue, then continued to weave through the city with officers speeding behind him.

After about a minute, Davis crashed into an SUV containing both victims near East Leland Road and Gladstone Drive. Police said a gun was later found in the Infiniti. The chase and crashed occurred around 12:40 a.m.
An online fundraiser for Tu’ipulotu says that she and Tagaloa had a summer wedding planned, and describes her as a “beautiful person, inside and out.” Davis was indicted six months after the crash.
