MARTINEZ — The suspect in a 2025 fatal shooting accepted a plea deal that came with a 25-year prison sentence, according to court records.
Chance Martin, 28, pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter and assault with a firearm in the April 16, 2025 shooting that killed Omar Gonzalez. Prosecutors originally charged Martin with murder but that count was dropped through the deal.
Concord police said at the time that Gonzalez, a 40-year-old husband and father of two who worked as a mechanic and had coached little league, was not the intended target. Martin was aiming at a group of people he’d gotten into an argument with, on the 1500 block of Monument Boulevard, authorities said.
He was arrested within two days of the killing. He gets credit for time he spent behind bars while the case was pending. The plea deal was finalized in June and Martin was sent to prison in July. He is currently housed at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi, records show.

An online fundraiser for Gonzalez’s family describes him as a “truly one of a kind” man.
“A devoted father, the life of every gathering, and a kind-hearted soul who was always ready to lend a helping hand. His presence lit up every room, and his absence leaves a void that can never be filled,” the fundraiser says. The Concord Junior Giants, where Gonzalez had been a coach, joined in fundraising efforts, the league’s commissioner calling him “one of the best coaches we could ask for.”
