Possible murder-suicide being investigated by Pleasanton police

A woman and man were found dead from gunshot wounds in a Pleasanton home and police are investigating the deaths as a possible murder-suicide.

PLEASANTON — Police are investigating a possible murder-suicide inside a home, authorities said Thursday.

The two people killed have been identified by police as Shelly Wang, 64, the owner of the home in the 4600 block of Jefferson Court, and Evgeniy Ilin, a 39-year-old man who was renting a room from her, police said in a news release. Both died from gunshot wounds.

Their bodies were found about 7:16 p.m. Wednesday after officers went to make a welfare check at the home, which is in a residential area not far from Interstate 680. A nearby tenant had been unable to contact them for several days and requested officers check on them, police said in a news release.

Officers entered the home and quickly found Wang, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Ilin was found deceased in another room with a single gunshot wound and a handgun was located next to him, police said.

Police said the gun was legally owned by Ilin and was registered to him. He had been living at the home for at least a couple of years, police said.

Police said both people appear to have died several days earlier.

At this time, the deaths are being investigated as a potential murder-suicide, police said. The motive is not known. No note was found, police said.

Investigators believe this was an isolated incident, and there is no threat to public safety.
