HAYWARD — A man who has long been suspected of killing an acquaintance after an argument inside a vehicle in 2019 has now been charged with murder, court records show.

Deverrick Johnson, 41, was charged with murder in the Dec. 8, 2019 shooting death of 31-year-old Anthony Hunter. For years, Hayward police have investigated Johnson as a suspect, seizing his phones, testing Hunter’s clothing for DNA, and interviewing witnesses, but just recently convinced prosecutors to file a case.
On Aug. 7, Johnson, a local barber, was charged with murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to court records. He remains jailed without bail and is set to enter a plea on Sept. 3, records show.

Hunter was shot about 20 minutes before 1 a.m., on the 27000 block of Belvedere Court. Police say an Infiniti with Hunter and two others drove up and appeared to be dropping him off at the address. He exited the car, began to argue with the other two occupants, and one of them shot and killed him.
Johnson was identified as the shooter based on witness statements and digital evidence, authorities said. The other occupant of the Infiniti hasn’t been publicly identified. Police arrested Johnson on a probable cause warrant in 2025, and attempted to question him about the homicide, but he refused, according to court records.
