SAN LEANDRO — A man and woman from Los Angeles have been charged with setting up men on opposite sides of California with the same simple scheme: advertising sex online, but robbing the victims at gunpoint instead, court records show.

Nafis Sami and Madison Droney, both 23 of Los Angeles, have been charged in Alameda County with robbing and attempted carjacking of a man at a San Leandro apartment complex last February. A week after the Feb. 9 robbery, the two were arrested in Los Angeles and charged in a similar alleged crime, involving a set up at a motel, authorities said.
The San Leandro complex, at Estabrook Circle, was the scene of a shooting last April that occurred under similar circumstances. A man was shot in the leg there while confronting people he believed had stolen his car. One of the vehicles present was registered to a suspected sex worker whose parking spot was utilized by the suspects in the Feb. 9 robbery, authorities said.
The man in the Feb. 9 robbery was directed to the apartments, then paid the woman $200, sending her the money to her Cash App account, “Trophy Droney,” according to police. Then the robber struck, taking the victim’s wallet and gun, worth about $2,000, authorities said. The victim reportedly fled, pantsless, and returned when he believed it was safe, to find his vehicle had been rummaged through.

What the Los Angeles victim went through was even more traumatizing. Police say after arranging a sex-for-money “date,” he showed up at a hotel only to be robbed by a man who stuck a gun in his mouth and led him to the bathroom. Droney and Sami were identified as suspects in that case first, then police in San Leandro noticed the similarities between the two crimes, leading to the criminal charges in the East Bay, court records show.
Droney had been in contact with the suspected sex worker who lived on Estabrook Circle, according to police. She and Sami are being housed in the Los Angeles County jail and have not yet come to the Bay Area to be arraigned in the Alameda County robbery case.
