OAKLAND — A car that struck a woman walking a dog Thursday morning in East Oakland was being driven by a 6-year-old boy whose 4-year-old brother was a passenger, authorities have confirmed.

Both boys remained hospitalized Friday in stable condition. The older boy was being treated for a broken leg and other injuries and his brother for a concussion, authorities said.
The 31-year-old woman who was struck by the vehicle remained in critical condition Friday.
The collision happened about 9:15 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of 35th and Mangels avenues in the Allendale district.
The boys were in a Toyota Camry that belongs to their parents, authorities said; the adults did not know they had taken the vehicle, police added. The older child was driving northbound on 35th Avenue when he swerved into the southbound traffic lanes and collided with another vehicle. The driver then lost control and went back into the northbound lanes, where the car struck the woman, who was walking a dog belonging to a resident in the area.
The car then came to a stop after striking a retaining wall and fence in the front yard of a residence.

The impact knocked the 31-year-old woman out of her shoes, authorities said. Authorities said she lives in another area of Oakland.
The dog was later found unharmed.
The Toyota’s airbags deployed and passersby removed the two boys from the vehicle and stayed with them until paramedics and police arrived.
The driver of the other vehicle that was struck was not injured and remained at the scene and gave a statement to officers.
Authorities said the boys’ parents are cooperating with investigators.
