SAN DIEGO — With the trade deadline less than 48 hours away, second baseman Luis Arraez was scratched from Saturday’s starting lineup for precautionary reasons after experiencing “cramping” during pregame warmups, according to the Giants.

Arraez, who will likely be dealt to another team by Monday’s trade deadline, was removed before the bottom of the seventh inning of Friday’s 7-0 loss due to cramping as well. Second baseman Osleivis Basabe started in Arraez’s place.
The 29-year-old Arraez has been one of the Giants’ best players this season, leading the majors with a .328 batting average while providing Gold Glove-caliber defense. Arraez, a four-time All-Star, is one of San Francisco’s most valuable trade assets, and there’s no reason for the team to risk further injury with the deadline so near.
San Francisco made a risky gambit on Thursday by allowing left-hander Robbie Ray, who will likely be traded as well, to start against the Padres. Despite the possibility of an injury, Ray delivered six innings of one-run ball in what will likely be his final start as a Giant.

The Los Angeles Angels, by contrast, took a different approach on Saturday by scratching starter José Soriano.
“With the trade deadline on Monday and the uncertainty of the next 48 hours, we decided to take a prudent approach and see where these next few days lead us,” the Angels wrote in a statement.
Along with Arraez, the list of players who the Giants could trade in the coming days includes Ray and Tyler Mahle, left fielder Heliot Ramos and relievers JT Brubaker, Caleb Kilian and Sam Hentges.
