PITTSBURG — A local resident is facing felony charges after his wife allegedly went through his phone and discovered he’d been trading child sexual abuse material online, then turned him in to police, court records show.

David Sumait, 26, was charged with two felonies related to the alleged possession and control of hundreds of child pornography files. He was held to answer after a preliminary hearing on Thursday, where police publicly detailed the investigation. After the hearing he was released from jail without bail, records show.
Sumait, of Pittsburg, was charged in mid-July after his wife called police to report his alleged crimes. She said she suspected Sumait of infidelity so she went through his phone, then became horrified to discover he was in chatrooms where child sexual abuse material was traded, authorities said.
Conversations reviewed by police include instances where Sumait sent or received images of naked prepubescent kids with other users. Police seized more than a dozen electronic devices and memory cards from his home, authorities said.

Sumait has pleaded not guilty. He was being held on $100,000 bail for about two weeks, until his release on Thursday, records show. He is next due in court on Aug. 17.
The charges aren’t Sumait’s only legal concern at the moment; his wife filed for divorce the same week he was arrested, records show.
