SAN JOSE — Goodwill of Silicon Valley has signed a lease for a new San Jose store in a deal that enables the nonprofit to expand in that area and fills a space that became vacant due to the demise of a once-mighty nationwide retailer.

The nonprofit has leased a former Rite-Aid store at 1029 East Capitol Expressway, according to documents on file with the Santa Clara County Recorder’s Office.
“We are always looking for larger store footprints to replace our smaller stores, as well as store locations that allow us to also process donations,” Goodwill of Silicon Valley chief executive officer Christopher Baker said. “This store fits that criteria.”
The future Goodwill store totals 15,400 square feet, according to commercial property databases. The location that the nonprofit will depart is at 1640 East Capitol Expressway and totals 8,600 square feet.

The Rite-Aid store site became available on the heels of two bankruptcies and the ultimate implosion of Rite-Aid, which ceased operations in October 2025 after closing all of its remaining physical stores.
Goodwill hopes that its expanded retail operations will help the nonprofit ride an upswing in what it sees as rising sales for its type of store.
“Thrifting is growing significantly faster than traditional retail, driven largely by living costs and eco-friendly shopping habits,” Baker said.
