Third victim of fatal San Francisco boating disaster identified

A body found floating in the waters near the Golden Gate Bridge over the weekend has been identified as one of the victims in the boat-sinking disaster near Alcatraz Island earlier this month that killed two others and left one still missing.

The San Francisco Medical Examiner’s Office on Tuesday identified the person found as 74-year-old Carol Boisa, a Sacramento County resident. Boisa was the younger sister of Clifford Boisa, 79, of Sutter County, who also died in the disaster.

Authorities also found a body on July 30 and identified her as 58-year-old Tondra Miller, of Sacramento County.

A fourth person missing in the aftermath of the sinking has not been found. John Boisa, Clifford Boisa’s brother, said that person is his his sister-in-law, Jackie Boisa. According to an online fundraiser seeking to support Clifford’s daughter, Mary Ann Boisa, Clifford and Jackie Boisa were planning to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in November.

San Francisco police in a statement said they found Carol Boisa about 10 a.m. Saturday off Point Diablo, west of the Marin County terminal point of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Authorities are still investigating why the 49-foot, three-story vessel dubbed the Volare sank on July 14. The Boisa’s and Miller were part of a group numbering about 20 people on a “family outing,” John Boisa told this news outlet. During the outing, they spread ashes of a family member who had died years ago.

A wave hit the craft about 3:30 p.m., causing it to list to one side before tipping over. Emergency crews and multiple private boaters rescued 16 people from the water. San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie lauded those rescuers for their “heroic” actions.

Authorities located the Volare on July 24 in the area where it sank near Alcatraz. Personnel using sonar equipment found it, but authorities have not yet brought it to the surface.
