A vegetation fire that started Sunday afternoon spread quickly toward the Gold Country city of Sonora, prompting evacuations.

The Dove Fire was reported before 3 p.m. near the junction of highways 108 and 49, and mandatory evacuations were in place within 20 minutes. Before 8 p.m., it had burned 223 acres, but activity was decreasing and one evacuation zone was downgraded to a warning around 9 p.m., the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said.

Highways 108 and 49 remained closed in the fire area on Monday morning, the California Department of Transportation said.
