Chris Foerster, the 49ers’ assistant head coach and their longtime offensive line czar, will handle unspecified head coach responsibilities until Shanahan is back to full strength and cleared from a concussion.
“Coach Shanahan will participate in team activities on a limited basis at training camp while he recovers,” according to a team statement. “Coach Shanahan and the 49ers organization would like to sincerely thank all first responders involved for their efforts and care.”
General manager John Lynch is expected to address reporters at 11 a.m. today. The 49ers’ first practice of training camp is Sunday at 10 a.m.
The location and other details of last week’s accident were not immediately known.

However, ESPN reported that, on July 14 near his South Bay home, Shanahan fractured his nose, a hand and three ribs, while requiring over 40 stitches to his face and sustaining a severe concussion. The report said drugs and alcohol were not cited by Palo Alto police, which investigated the crash, and nobody was ticketed in the collision.
Shanahan, 46, has led the 49ers to the playoffs in five of the past seven seasons, including Super Bowl berths in the 2019 and ’23 seasons.
The 49ers open this coming season on Sept. 11 in Melbourne, Australia against the Los Angeles Rams.
