While a Palo Alto resident was investigating an early morning doorbell, a stranger slipped inside the house and locked himself in the bathroom, police said.

The intrusion happened around 2 a.m. Sunday at a house on Julie Court, off Matadero Avenue in the Barron Park neighborhood, a police news release said.
The residents — a man and woman in their 50s — told police that someone rang their doorbell, but the man found nobody on their porch. He walked to the driveway to investigate further and saw evidence that one of their cars had been rummaged through.
While the resident was outside, someone entered the house through the open front door, and the woman who lives there called the police.
When officers arrived, they were told that the intruder was in a locked bathroom. They forced open the door and took the man into custody.

The residents were not injured, and they reported no items missing, the police said.
Video from the home’s security camera showed that the suspect first approached the home around 1:15 a.m.
Identified as a 46-year-old San Jose man, he faces charges of residential burglary, resisting arrest, providing false information to police (he allegedly gave an incorrect name), possession of methamphetamine and violation of parole.
