DUBLIN — A Fremont man has been sentenced to six years in state prison after pleading no contest to killing a young woman in a head-on collision nearly three years ago, court records show.

Jesus Cancino Garcia, 27, pleaded no contest to a charge of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated in the October 2023 crash that killed 23-year-old Anjali Nand. He was sentenced in April, after hearing a statement from Nand’s mother, court records show.
Cancino Garcia was transferred to prison in June, records show. Before he was sentenced, he submitted two apology letters — one to the court, the other to Nand’s family, in which he offered an apology “from the bottom of my heart.”
“Please understand, I am not asking you to forgive me, I am anguished by the harm I have done…I am so very utterly sorry that this occurred,” Cancino Garcia wrote. It was never my intention to harm anyone. I wish only that I would have stayed home that mournful night.”

Nand, listed in court filings as a Santa Rosa resident, had recently graduated from Sonoma State University and was planning to start law school around the time of her death, according to social media postings. She was a passenger in a BMW that was stuck head-on by Cancino Garcia’s vehicle at around 1:15 a.m. Oct. 14, 2023, on Interstate 680 in Fremont, according to court records.
Cancino Garcia and the driver of the BMW were both hospitalized with serious injuries. Authorities later determined that Cancino Garcia was drunk behind the wheel and got onto the freeway heading in the wrong direction, causing the crash.
