Inclusive, space-themed playground set for liftoff in Sunnyvale

The City of Sunnyvale is hosting a July 29 ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the completion of an all-inclusive, space-themed playground at Lakewood Park. A new tot lot and new exercise equipment are also now ready for public use.

While the playground is officially open, park visitors are asked to stick to the open areas as the makeover continues on the rest of the 60-year-old park. The John W. Christian Greenbelt pathway and the basketball, tennis and handball courts will remain open for public use.

The ribbon cutting is set for 10 a.m. at the southeast corner of the park, located at 834 Lakechime Drive.

Youth Climate Summit

Registration is open for the annual Youth Climate Summit hosted by Silicon Valley Youth Climate Action. The event, featuring a keynote address by Sen. Josh Becker, is set for Saturday, Aug. 8, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., at the Quinlan Community Center in Cupertino.

The youth-led nonprofit holds the annual summit to help attendees make a difference and fight climate change. The event includes workshops or panels on topics such as water and climate change, transit-oriented communities and clean energy. Members of the League of California Cities-Peninsula Division and local elected officials will engage with students and community members.

The League of California Cities-Peninsula Division is co-hosting the summit along with Sunnyvale-based Silicon Valley Clean Energy and the Santa Clara County Office of Education.

This event is free for students; adults are requested to make a donation of $25 or more. Lunch will be provided, but attendees should bring their own water bottles.
