Adames, Eldridge begin second half with bang, power SF Giants to win vs. Mariners

SEATTLE — The baseball wasn’t exactly flying out to center field in the early innings on Friday night at T-Mobile Park.

In the bottom of the second, the Mariners’ Luke Raley sent a 400-foot drive to straightaway center field that Drew Gilbert caught with his back to the wall. In the next half inning, Casey Schmitt hit a 386-foot fly ball that faded at the center-field warning track and nestled innocently into the glove of the Mariners’ Victor Robles.

Those flyouts made Willy Adames and Bryce Eldridge’s respective displays of power all the more impressive.

Led by Adames’ grand slam and Eldridge’s two-run homer — both of which were hit to the “J-Rod Squad” beyond the right-center field fence — the Giants began the second half with a 7-0 win against the Mariners, their third victory in a row. Should San Francisco win on Saturday, it will be the team’s first time winning at least four games in a row this season.

Not to be overshadowed by Adames and Eldridge was Landen Roupp, who allowed just two hits across seven shutout innings. Roupp’s strong beginning to the second half follows an emphatic conclusion to the first half when he pitched eight innings of one-run ball against the Toronto Blue Jays. In July, he’s allowed just one run over 15 innings, trimming his ERA from 4.55 to 3.98 over these two outings.

Eldridge gave the Giants a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth with his ninth home run of the year, a two-run shot off the Mariners’ Bryce Miller on a splitter that caught too much strike zone. After the Giants scored a run in the sixth, Adames broke the game wide open with an opposite-field grand slam with just enough legs to clear the right-center field fence.

Reliever Jason Foley, making his first appearance in the majors since Sept. 27, 2024, retired the side in the eighth and ended his day by recording a strikeout on an elevated fastball.

Fresh off making his third straight trip to the All-Star Game, Logan Webb (5-7, 3.86 ERA) will make his first appearance of the second half. Webb’s opposition on Saturday evening will be Bryan Woo (7-6, 4.23 ERA), whose 3.05 FIP ranks fourth among all American League starters.
