REDWOOD CITY — A man died Tuesday evening after being struck by a vehicle as he confronted what he believed was a hit-and-run driver, authorities said.

The victim was a passenger riding in a Jeep which had been driving southbound on Hudson Street, according to a news release Wednesday from the Redwood City Police Department. A Ford pickup truck sideswiped the Jeep while leaving an alleyway.
The Jeep’s driver pulled the vehicle over after the collision but the Ford truck drove away in a westbound direction on Woodside Road, authorities said.
The Ford truck then got stuck in traffic, authorities said. The Jeep’s passenger exited the vehicle and approached the truck to attempt to stop it, where he then fell from the vehicle and was struck by the truck.
Around 7:41 p.m., police responded to the 800 block of Woodside Road, where they found medical personnel administering aid to the victim, authorities said. He was later pronounced deceased.

The man’s identity will be released by the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office after confirmation of his name and notification of next of kin.
Police from the RCPD carried out a search of the vicinity of the collision and located the suspect vehicle, which had been abandoned, authorities added. The vehicle was taken into evidence.
Investigators also acquired surveillance video and found witnesses to the collision, authorities said.
