SAN FRANCISCO — The Giants are shaking up their pitching staff after yet another series loss.

San Francisco called up Carson Whisenhunt from Triple-A Sacramento Thursday morning, demoting beleaguered reliever Ryan Walker in a corresponding roster move.
Whisenhunt, 25, has made one appearance for the Giants this season. They called him up for a spot start in June, where he went five innings and allowed two runs on six hits in a 7-5 win in Atlanta.
Giants manager Tony Vitello said on KNBR Thursday that Whisenhunt will start San Francisco’s series opener against Colorado on Thursday night.
Walker, 30, has struggled mightily in his fourth season in San Francisco, posting a 7.52 ERA in 27 appearances. He conceded three runs and two home runs in one inning in the Giants’ 10-0 loss to Toronto on Wednesday, a defeat that clinched a series win for the Canadian visitors.

He was one of the better relievers in baseball in 2024, posting a 1.91 ERA in 76 appearances. But after recording 10 saves as a sometime closer that season, Walker backslid to a 4.11 ERA while moving in and out of the closer role in 2025.
The four-year veteran was also demoted to Sacramento in May before being called back up in June. Walker was also one of a number of Giants pitchers who wrote Bible verses on their hats during San Francisco’s Pride Night in June, igniting a controversy that has engulfed the franchise for nearly a month.
