OAKLAND — An Oakland police car collided with a privately owned ambulance about a block from the city’s downtown police station, resulting in major damage to both vehicle, this news organization has learned.

The police car, a silver Ford Taurus used by the investigation division, contained two Oakland police homicide detectives who were able to continue their shift after the crash, authorities said. The ambulance transport van was reportedly carrying a patient on their way to a scheduled doctor’s appointment.
Pictures of the crash scene, published by KTVU, show the police car was unmarked but equipped with lights. A person on a stretcher, believed to be the patient, can be seen in some of the photographs. The front end of the ambulance appears to have T-boned the cop car on its passenger side.

The crash occurred around 9:30 a.m. on June 30, near 5th and Washington streets in downtown Oakland. Authorities seized dash cam video from the ambulance and say it appeared to have run a red light, but the crash remains under investigation.
