SAN JOSE — With the World Cup’s games in the Bay Area dried up, local sports fans now have another championship tournament to watch — the U.S. National Table Tennis Championships in San Jose.

Over 1,100 competitors daring to make it to the top of the country’s largest seven-day table tennis tournament will compete through July 9 at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center.
The tournament, which kicked off Friday, features youth, adult, senior and para-athletes who will challenge each other in 113 events for a chance to make the U.S. National Team.
San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan joined in the fun Friday, serving and smashing with a paddle in a San Jose Earthquakes jersey.
“Table tennis is a perfect fit for San Jose,” Mahan said in a statement. “It’s fast, precise, global, competitive, and accessible, a sport played by people of all ages and backgrounds. That sounds a lot like our city.”

“To every athlete competing this week, welcome to San Jose. We are so proud to host you. We hope you play your very best, enjoy our beautiful city and feel the hospitality of our community,” Mahan said.
USA Table Tennis CEO Virginia Sung said in a statement that she is proud that the tournament displays such a wide variety of athletes.
“From eight-year-olds to competitors in their 80s. From athletes with Parkinson’s disease to para-athletes, from recreational ping-pong players to some of the very best athletes in the country,” Sung said.
