DENVER — Shortstop Willy Adames is in Friday night’s starting lineup against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field after missing the Giants’ series against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field due to a back ailment.

“We went late with the lineup today just to be sure about what we wanted to do,” said manager Tony Vitello. “If you know Willy, he’s not going to do anything different, but I think we want to monitor it, even during pregame and early in the game. If we got to do something, we’ll do something, in particular with the availability of [Christian] Koss, but I do think he’s in a good spot.”
Adames departed Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Braves due to back spasms after striking out to end the seventh inning, noticeably grimacing during the follow-through of his swing.
“My lower back has been bothering me for a few days,” Adames said on Sunday. “It just got locked up today in my first at-bat. It just stayed there. In my last at-bat, it just got worse.”

In Adames’ place, superutility man Casey Schmitt started at shortstop on Monday and Tuesday while Christian Koss got the nod on Wednesday after being recalled from Triple-A Sacramento.
Adames, 30, enters Friday hitting .231/.275/.430 with 14 home runs and 32 RBI. Since joining the Giants, Adames is hitting .344 with four home runs and 14 RBIs at Coors Field.
