BRENTWOOD — A Heritage High School educator has filed a lawsuit against the local school district and the city, blaming both entities for serious injuries she sustained when she fell on an allegedly loose red carpet during a 2025 staff gala.

The February 2025 staff gala was intended to celebrate local teachers. Instead, the suit claims its organizers ended up inadvertently injuring one. The suit says that staffers were “directed” to “walk on the carpet for photographic purposes.”
The plaintiff, Pamela Araujo, tripped on “unsecured and loose carpet” carpet, the suit says. She is attempting to recover damages from lost wages as well as “hospital and medical expenses” resulting from the fall.

Since the suit was filed in late February, both the city of Brentwood and Liberty Union School District have filed court papers arguing the other entity should be held liable for any damages. A status conference two weeks ago failed to resolve the issues and the parties are set to meet again, but not until December, court records show.
Public payroll records identify Araujo as a special education teacher who has worked for the district for nearly 15 years. The gala was held at the Brentwood Senior Center on Griffin Lane, court records show.
