A massive fire tore through two houses Sunday afternoon in Castro Valley, injuring one firefighter and displacing at least six people.

The blaze erupted about 3:50 p.m. at a house in the 22000 block of Queen Street, and eventually spread to a neighboring house, according to Ryan Nishimoto, a deputy chief with the Alameda County Fire Department. In the process, the flames scorched an accessory dwelling unit on one of the properties.
The fire has since been brought under control, though crews are expected to remain on scene overnight to monitor hot spots and ensure it doesn’t spark back up.
One firefighter suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene, Nishimoto said.

More than three dozen firefighters were called to the blaze, including crews from the Alameda County, Oakland, Hayward and Alameda fire departments.
