SAN JOSE — A man riding a Segway scooter died days after he lost control and fell in a San Jose bike lane, police said Thursday.

The crash was reported just before 5 p.m. June 9 near Commercial Street and Oakland Road. Police said the man was riding east on Commercial Street in the westbound bike lane when he lost control “at a high rate of speed” and fell to the ground.
The rider, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. He died June 13, police said.
His name has not been publicly released pending his formal identification and notification of his next of kin by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.

The death marks San Jose’s 22nd roadway death of the year and the first involving someone operating a scooter, according to police and data compiled by this news organization. San Jose had recorded 12 traffic deaths at the same point in 2025 and recorded two scooter deaths by the end of that year.
