SANTA CRUZ COUNTY — Local authorities have identified the motorcyclist who was killed after his vehicle veered off the road in the Santa Cruz Mountains June 7.

The victim has been identified as Mervyn Jerome Castillo, 30, of Martinez, a spokesperson for the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Monday.
Castillo had been driving his 2023 Ducati motorcycle on northbound Highway 9 south of Highway 35 at an unknown rate of speed June 7. For reasons that remain under investigation, his vehicle deviated off the roadway and collided with an embankment and tree east of the highway.

California Highway Patrol officers responded to the crash at approximately 12:40 p.m. Despite efforts by medical personnel to save Castillo’s life, he sustained major injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation by the CHP.
