SAN JOSE – A woman is dead and a man is in custody following a stabbing early Monday in South San Jose, police said.

Officers went to a home in the 5800 block of Snell Avenue around 12:45 a.m. to check on the welfare of a person who had been assaulted, San Jose police Sgt. Jorge Garibay said in a news release. They arrived to find a woman suffering from at least one stab wound.
Medical personnel tended to the woman, but she died at the scene. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office will release the woman’s identity once it is confirmed and her next of kin is notified.
Officers arrested a man at the scene, Garibay said, adding that the victim and suspect knew each other. Garibay said the man’s identity will be released at a later date.

“The motive and circumstances surrounding the event are under investigation,” he said.
The case is being investigated as San Jose’s 12th homicide of 2026. At this point last year, police had investigated 11 killings.
