Oakland building with history of fires goes up again in two-alarm blaze

An Oakland building with a history of fires went up in smoke again on June 13, threatening nearby structures before firefighters put it out.

On Saturday afternoon, the Oakland Fire Department received multiple calls for a blaze at a single-story building at 9029 International Blvd. “We got multiple calls en route, and it was heavily involved on our arrival,” said Battalion Chief Michael Hughes.

The building is located near 90th Ave. and businesses like Reina’s Restaurant and the East 14th Smoke, Vape & Gift Shop.

“It had several previous fires in it before, and had been boarded up and abandoned,” Hughes said, adding that he didn’t know what the building’s original purpose was. “It’s been boarded up for so long I can’t recall — it’s been years.”

The blaze grew into a two-alarm fire and one of the exterior walls collapsed. There were initial exposure concerns to nearby structures before firefighters were able to contain the fire. They were still working Saturday evening putting out hot spots.

There were no injuries or fatalities reported. Because the fire was raging so aggressively, a possible cause was not immediately clear.

“There will be an investigation, and it will likely be witness accounts and any video evidence our investigator can get ahold of,” Hughes said.
