CONTRA COSTA COUNTY – Crews on Thursday evening were battling a grass fire south of Pittsburg.

The blaze, dubbed the Norton Fire, was first reported around 5:25 p.m. at Black Diamond Way and Nortonville Road, near the Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve, Cal Fire said.
The fire consumed 40 acres before crews stopped its forward progress, the Cal Fire Santa Clara Unit said in a social media post around 6:45 p.m.

“While steep terrain and weather conditions have made containment difficult, firefighters are making good progress,” Cal Fire said.

As of 8:10 p.m., the fire was 40% contained.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
