An 80-year-old Carmel man pleaded no contest to murdering his wife and will be sentenced to 20 years to life in prison, prosecutors said Friday.

Donel Mark Geisen was accused of second-degree murder with the use of a knife and felony domestic violence for the 2025 killing, the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office said.
On July 24, 2025, Geisen called 911 and reported that he had murdered his wife, Barbara Lynn Geisen, and stabbed himself, prosecutors said.

“When deputies arrived at their Carmel residence, they found Mr. Geisen suffering from multiple self-inflicted stab wounds,” according to the District Attorney’s Office. “They then found Mrs. Geisen, 78, deceased inside of the residence. She had been stabbed multiple times.”
Geisen was taken to Natividad Medical Center in Salinas for treatment and later admitted to murdering his wife before trying to kill himself, prosecutors said.

He is to be sentenced on July 10.
