PACIFICA — The city of Pacifica on Thursday closed its decades-old municipal pier over public safety concerns.

The decision was driven by “observed cracking, separation and displacement of the concrete walkway and structural elements near the pier abutment,” the city said in a news release.
A city structural engineer is conducting an assessment of the structure, which will remain off limits until it is deemed safe for public use once again, according to the city.
“Thank you for your cooperation and your patience while the city works diligently to ensure the pier is safe and can continue to be an important public amenity,” the city said.

This is not the first time the pier has been closed. In late 2023, storms damaged the west-facing deck and concrete railing, leading to a multi-week closure. The pier was also closed for two months in 2021 after it was pummeled by storms and high tides.
The L-shaped structure was constructed in 1973 and is popular with fishermen and crabbers.
