FREMONT — Fire crews put out a one-alarm fire at a vacant commercial building Thursday morning that spewed a smoke plume hundreds of yards high and wide.

The smoke from the blaze at a building in the 2100 block of Prune Avenue — about 2½ miles from the Tesla company on Fremont Boulevard — could be seen for several miles. It did not injure anyone, fire authorities said.
A crew of 24 firefighters needed about an hour to put it out.
Fremont Fire Division Chief Matthew Schneider said crews likely would be there into the afternoon going through the rubble of the building.
“The smoke it sent into the air was two or three football fields wide,” Schneider said.

Crews were on the scene six minutes after the fire was reported at 8:51 a.m. They weren’t able to enter the building immediately and fought the fire from the outside initially. Schneider said they later were able to get inside the building and will continue to go through it to put out hot spots and clean up the rubble.
Schneider said nobody was injured. Investigators have not determined what caused it.
Authorities closed down Osgood Road at Prune Street while crews fought the blaze.
