A park spokesperson said the deaths occurred May 25 near Roaring River Falls, in the Cedar Grove area. The Fresno County coroner’s office identified the pair as Parth Patel, 30, and Dharti Patel, 29, of San Mateo.
The waterfall, where the Roaring River runs through a granite chute, is a popular site for tourist photos and is reached by a quarter-mile hike. An account on social media by someone who reportedly witnessed the Memorial Day accident said Dharti Patel slipped on the rocks and fell into the river, and her husband went in to try to rescue her.
It was one of several drownings in California rivers and lakes since the holiday weekend.
• A 31-year-old Campbell man was found dead Saturday, May 30, in Calaveras County’s Lake Tulloch. He apparently began struggling while swimming back from an island about 90 feet offshore, the sheriff’s office said. He had not been publicly identified as of June 2.
• James Romero Soriano, 24, died Monday, June 1, after being swept away in the San Joaquin River in Mendota, the Fresno County sheriff’s office said.
• Juan Carlos Garcia Gutierrez, 36, of Lancaster, drowned in Donner Lake on May 24, the Truckee Police Department said. He had reportedly jumped off a boat to go swimming and then couldn’t get back after the boat drifted away.
