{"id":964,"date":"2026-06-01T17:39:36","date_gmt":"2026-06-01T17:39:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nextcitydigest.com\/?p=964"},"modified":"2026-06-01T17:39:36","modified_gmt":"2026-06-01T17:39:36","slug":"man-with-multiple-vehicle-theft-convictions-charged-in-two-more-alleged-thefts-in-oakland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nextcitydigest.com\/?p=964","title":{"rendered":"Man with multiple vehicle theft convictions charged in two more alleged thefts in Oakland"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>OAKLAND \u2014 A man with 13 prior felony convictions, including six for vehicle theft, has been charged with two more counts of the same offense, including one incident where a 76-year-old man was injured trying to stop the theft of his pickup truck, according to authorities and court records.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/nextcitydigest.com\/?p=963\">Nvidia bets on AI personal computers with new \u2018superchip\u2019 powering Windows laptops<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The 31-year-old suspect is being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail, where he was awaiting arraignment on the new charges as well as parole and probation revocation hearings.<\/p>\n<p>Besides the two counts of unlawful driving or taking of a vehicle, he is also charged with evading an officer with willful disregard for the safety of persons or property. The counts include enhancements that the thefts involved great violence or great bodily harm and that they were committed while the suspect was on probation or parole.<\/p>\n<p>The new charges stem from thefts allegedly committed on May 19.<\/p>\n<p>According to authorities and the records, about 5:15 p.m. May 19, the 76-year-old owner of a pickup truck was unloading a piece of furniture from the truck, which was parked in front of his home in the 1900 block of 41st Avenue with the driver\u2019s door open and the keys in the ignition.<\/p>\n<p>A car that turned out to have been stolen earlier in Oakland pulled up, the suspect got out and got into the truck and drove off, police said.<\/p>\n<p>The stolen car drove away and was later recovered. The person who drove it away is being sought.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/nextcitydigest.com\/?p=961\">Anthropic confidentially files to go public<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The truck owner grabbed onto the passenger\u2019s side door to try and stop the theft, but was dragged at least a half-block before falling off and suffering numerous cuts and bruises.<\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The truck was later spotted in Alameda about 7:45 p.m. Alameda police pursued it for a brief time, before turning the chase over to a California Highway Patrol airplane. The truck was followed through Oakland, out to Richmond and then across the Bay Bridge, where the CHP and San Francisco police laid down spike strips to disable the truck, the records say. It was still able to drive several miles before exiting Highway 101 at high speed and crashing in the 1900 block of Carroll Avenue in the Bayview district.where the suspect was arrested.<\/p>\n<p>He later allegedly told Oakland investigators he stole the truck to pay off a debt, authorities said..<\/p>\n<p>According to court records, the suspect\u2019s prior vehicle theft convictions were in November 2025, January 2022, March 2017, March 2016, August 2013 and May 2013. He went to prison after the 2016 conviction and was placed on probation for the other five.<\/p>\n<p>He also has prior convictions for second degree robbery in July 2020, possession of ammunition by a prohibited person in October 2022 and five counts of evading a peace officer between January 2015 and January 2024.
