But today, as a public service, let’s simply offer some help to those contemplating relocating outside the Golden State.

Read more Influencer Olivia Oras, 27, dead after liposuction ‘gone wrong,’ family says

My trusty spreadsheet reviewed numerous economic and demographic metrics and several “best state to live in” rankings to grade the 49 other states on their desirability as a new home state.

State-by-state yardsticks for the cost of living, economic opportunity, overall livability, education and medical quality, safety and business friendliness were created. Consensus scores from other “best state” rankings were tabulated, too.

When each state’s grades were averaged using those metrics, the best state for a departing Californian in 2026 has a “Live Free or Die” motto and New England flair – New Hampshire. Next in the rankings came Idaho, Utah, Minnesota and Nebraska.

At the other end of the desirability scale was Louisiana. Alaska, New Mexico, Arkansas and Mississippi filled out the bottom five.

Of course, we must note where California’s economic arch-rivals fell on this relocation scorecard: Texas ranked 28th and Florida was No. 11.

By the way, if California had been included in this favorability scorecard, it would have ranked a lowly No. 38.

Remember, any “best state” ranking is best viewed as fodder for debate than any absolute scientific conclusion. Especially when every person’s relocation has a different story behind it.

Examine the seven factors that went into the final grades, which are examples of factors important to different households thinking about leaving California.

Paying the bills

Money drives many Californians to leave, so the cost of living in other states must figure into any search for a new home.

For folks seeking an economic bargain – or those who are fundamentally frugal – the math says go to Iowa. Next for affordability are West Virginia, Missouri, South Dakota and Alabama.

Conversely, any cash-minded relocation should try to avoid New York, Hawaii, New Jersey, Connecticut and Rhode Island.

This calculation ranks Texas No. 33 and Florida No. 42. They no longer offer the discount living they once did.

And, no surprise, California would have ranked No. 49 if included in these grades – ahead of only New York.

Eyeing opportunities

Your odds of paying the bills, even in a cheap spot, are enhanced where paychecks are bountiful.

Plus, the wealth created by a strong business scene can translate into an abundance of life’s necessities for job seekers, families, retirees or people simply seeking a new vibe.

This tally found that Utah had the best state economy. Then came Idaho, South Dakota, New Hampshire and Virginia.

This same math tells any relocation hopeful to avoid Louisiana, West Virginia, Mississippi, Kentucky and Illinois.

California’s rivals scored well. Texas was 11th best. Florida ranked No. 6.

And the Golden State? It would have been No. 34, if included.

Living the life

Money isn’t everything – though it can certainly improve life.

Think about “livability” and an attempt to quantify all the intangibles that make any state’s lifestyle appealing.

This math says the most livable state is Minnesota, so warm clothing is required. Then comes New York, Washington, Florida and Nebraska. Texas was No. 32, by the way.

A California relocation should avoid the lowest quality-of-life states: Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Alabama and West Virginia.

Note: Departing Californians would give up a No. 25 ranking, if the state were included on this scorecard.

Two key factors

Depending on a soon-to-be ex-Californian’s needs, the quality of a state’s education system and healthcare is behind any move.

This tabulation says Massachusetts is No. 1 for schools and medicine. Then came Connecticut, New Hampshire, New Jersey and Minnesota.

Read more Palo Alto-based Vietnamese street food chain expands north

Alternatively, try to avoid West Virginia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Arkansas.

The rivals got mid-range grades: Texas was No. 36, while Florida ranked No. 24.

Yet this is a California strength. It would be 18th best if included.

Are you safe?

While the odds of you being a crime victim can be quantified, its importance is very much a matter of state of mind.

So the safety score can have a wildly varied importance in your relocation thinking.

The stats say New Hampshire is the safest state. Followed by Maine, Rhode Island, Idaho and Connecticut.

And the most dangerous place to live is New Mexico. Then come Alaska, Arkansas, Louisiana and Tennessee.

Rivals were middle-of-the-pack: Texas was No. 36 for safety. Florida ranked No. 23.

And California? It would have been No. 42, if included.

What bosses think

Business-friendly states are often, though not always, places that offer a variety of lifestyle amenities.

So, this relocation math included my recent rankings of states as places to do business.

Utah is best for bosses. The top five included key rivals Texas and Florida, as well as North Carolina and Colorado.

And Hawaii was the worst. Followed by Louisiana, West Virginia, Mississippi and Rhode Island.

California? It’s entrepreneurship culture meant it would have been No. 15, if included.

Other voices

“Best place to live” rankings are abundant and often reach very different conclusions for a host of reasons. Remember, the science of ranking mixes statistics with a heavy dose of art.

To incorporate other thinking into my scorecard, the final factor was a compilation of state grades from US News, WalletHub, CNBC, America’s Dashboard, OCity and ConsumerAffairs.

The consensus gave New Hampshire the best average grade, followed by Massachusetts, Idaho, Minnesota and New Jersey.

The bottom five of the consensus were Louisiana, New Mexico, Arkansas, Alaska, and Oklahoma.

The rivals received “meh” grades: Texas was No. 38. Florida ranked No. 16.

This consensus was also not kind to California: 37th best, if included.

Red coloring

Plenty of ex-Californians insist that politics drove them from the Golden State as they felt their conservative views were a lifestyle liability.

Partisanship wasn’t part of these calculations, but what if it was?

Using data on political leanings, religious beliefs, taxation and support for President Donald Trump, a ranking of a state’s conservatism was built. South Dakota was most conservative, Vermont the least – and California would be No. 47, if included.

Next, we recalculated the relocation scorecard by adding the conservatism grades to the desirability formula.

This partisan-adjusted math says the best states for the conservative-minded are Idaho, Utah, South Dakota, North Dakota and New Hampshire.

These same folks should avoid New Mexico, Alaska, Louisiana, Nevada and Oregon.

With a political spin, Texas ranks 21st best and Florida No. 10.

No surprise, California would have gotten a poor grade: No. 46 on a partisan-leaning “best state” scorecard vs. No. 38 when politics were not part of the equation.

PS: Want all the rankings?
