To identify America\u2019s most popular beers, Innerbody Research analyzed Google Trends search data across all 50 states and Washington, D.C. over a 12-month span. The end result was a set of search interest index scores awarded to each individual beer and a search interest index score awarded to each state. In doing so, we established our rankings of the favorite prominent beers nationally and by state as well as the states with the greatest love of beer.<\/p>

      Record-low consumption<\/h4>\n

      The percentage of U.S. adults who say they consume alcohol has fallen to 54%, the lowest by one percentage point in Gallup\u2019s nearly 90-year trend. This coincides with a growing belief among Americans that moderate alcohol consumption is bad for one\u2019s health, now the majority view for the first time.<\/p>

      Gallup has tracked Americans\u2019 drinking behavior since 1939 and their views of the health implications of moderate drinking since 2001. The latest results are from Gallup\u2019s annual Consumption Habits survey, conducted July 7-21.<\/p>\n

      From 1997 to 2023, at least 60% of Americans reported drinking alcohol. The figure rose to 62% in 2023 and fell to 58% in 2024, before reaching 54% today. Prior to the most recent poll, the rate has been under 60% fewer than 10 times, including 58% in the initial 1939 poll and a one-time low of 55% recorded in 1958. The highs of 68% to 71% were all recorded between 1974 and 1981.<\/p>\n

      According to the Brewers Association, 2025 beer sales were down 5.7% and craft beer sales were down 3.8%.<\/p>

      1776-2026<\/h4>\n

      George Washington fought the British for independence and Congress for beer.<\/p>\n

      One of George Washington\u2019s first acts as commander of the Continental Army was to proclaim that every one of his troops would receive a quart of beer with his daily rations.<\/p>\n

      As the Revolutionary War progressed, however, supplies of beer dwindled. And an irate Washington had to do battle with another opponent \u2013 the Continental Congress \u2013 in order to have his troops\u2019 rations restored.<\/p>\n

      Perhaps Washington\u2019s interest in beer had something to do with the fact that he was an accomplished brewmaster himself. The father of our country maintained a private brewery at Mount Vernon. His handwritten recipe for beer was said by his peers to be superb. The journal and recipe are digitized and viewable online and are kept in the New York Public Library\u2019s Manuscripts and Archives Division.<\/p>\n

      Encouraging responsible consumption<\/h4>\n

      The Beer Institute\u2019s advice:<\/p>\n

      We believe \u201clow and slow\u201d is good advice for consumers. This means opting for alcohol beverages with lower alcohol by volume and consuming those drinks over time. This supports moderation and aligns with broader public health goals to reduce harmful alcohol consumption worldwide by 2030.<\/p>\n
