With each application of methomyl now popping up on the California Department of Pesticide Regulation\u2019s SprayDays alert system and an especially bad pest season increasing spraying, Salinas Valley citizens are raising questions about the health of their communities.<\/p>\n

For many living near these fields, methomyl\u2019s track record \u2013 banned in dozens of countries, acutely toxic, with possible links to endocrine disorder \u2013 is cause for alarm. But without it, farmers could lose their crops to an onslaught of insects, said Monterey County Agricultural Commissioner Juan Hidalgo.<\/p>\n

Yanely Martinez, a mother, pesticide activist and former Greenfield city councilwoman, represents those with concerns. She calls the relative lack of information about the effects of pesticides on her community \u201cpesticide secrecy.\u201d<\/p>\n

A major step forward in the call for transparency happened last year with the introduction of SprayDays \u2013 which sends out notifications each time a \u201crestricted material\u201d is sprayed. Since the spring 2025, those who sign up for SprayDays notifications receive alerts at least 24 hours before restricted materials like methomyl are set to be sprayed. The notifications list the substance, time, method of application and location within a square mile.<\/p>\n

During nearby applications, the SprayDays website recommends keeping doors and windows closed and children and pets inside.<\/p>\n

On social media<\/h4>\n

Since SprayDays began, Martinez and her kids have been posting videos on social media about the time and location of pesticide applications, via the group Safe Ag, Safe Schools.<\/p>\n

With the new alerts, Martinez and other activists in the valley began to notice an influx of methomyl applications, which she said hadn\u2019t been on the radar previously.<\/p>\n

The alerts are \u201ctalking about an active ingredient, methomyl, but it didn\u2019t elaborate,\u201d said Martinez.<\/p>\n

Martinez said following the videos they made and posted to social media, people started leaving comments reporting having symptoms of pesticide exposure near the application sites.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe started receiving people coming forward privately and publicly that said, \u2018hey, wait a minute, I worked in a field adjacent to a field that got sprayed on and I noticed that I\u2019ve been throwing up for the last couple of days,\u2019\u201d Martinez recounted.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe started noticing there was a correlation between folks that were complaining about having headaches constantly, feeling nausea, vomiting. Those are part of the short-term effects of methomyl,\u201d Martinez said.<\/p>\n

Saving the crops<\/h4>\n

Methomyl has been essential for controlling a particularly bad pest year and is heavily regulated, said Hidalgo, who approves permits on restricted materials.<\/p>\n

Hidalgo said that the seemingly large number of alerts about methomyl is due to farmers applying the pesticide to several small portions of their property at a time as opposed to a large swath all at once.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn average, our growers are treating a 12-acre block,\u201d Hidalgo said. \u201cThey run maybe 200 acres but they\u2019re only treating a small block within those 200 acres and it\u2019s just the nature of how we farm here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, Hidalgo said that in total, more methomyl is being applied this year than average.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been really difficult for our growers here,\u201d Hidalgo said. \u201cThe winter was extremely warm and when we have warm winters like that, the pests just don\u2019t have a chance to get reduced.\u201d<\/p>\n

After a warm winter, which kills off fewer of last year\u2019s pests, growers start the season at a disadvantage, with already high levels of bugs. Those pest levels typically increase over the summer, said Hidalgo.<\/p>\n

Both aphids and thrips, the two most common lettuce pests in the Salinas Valley, cause enough cosmetic damage to render lettuce unsellable. Thrips bring the additional threat of transmitting Impatiens Necrotic Spot Virus, which kills the plant.<\/p>\n

The virus saw an uptick in 2025 compared to 2023 and 2024, causing a decline in value for some lettuce producers according to the 2025 Monterey County Crop Report.<\/p>\n

Hidalgo said that part of the process for approving a restricted materials permit involves first trying to use other means, \u201cbiological controls\u201d such as lady bugs \u2013 predator to the aphid \u2013 for example.<\/p>\n

Growers complain, however, that these methods are not as effective as chemical pesticides and with the increased pest pressure, usage of methomyl \u2013 commonly sold under the names Lannate or Nudrin \u2013 has gone up too, said Hidalgo.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce we get into the summer months, it gets a little bit warmer, and insect pressure begins to increase significantly, and some of the other tools don\u2019t do quite as good of a job to be able to control the pests, and so (growers) have to resort to using Lannate,\u201d Hidalgo said. \u201cIt could lead to losing the crop if they don\u2019t do something about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Methomyl\u2019s toxicity<\/h4>\n

In many other countries, such as China, India and the 27-nation European Union, methomyl is not approved for use.<\/p>\n

The substance is still permitted across the United States but is restricted in more than a few states, given a toxicity that the EPA characterizes as \u201chighly to moderately toxic when a person is exposed to the pesticide via mouth, eyes or inhalation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf a human is exposed to methomyl via mouth, skin or inhalation, methomyl can overstimulate the nervous system resulting in nausea, dizziness, confusion and at very high exposures respiratory paralysis and death,\u201d according to the EPA.<\/p>\n

Methomyl is highly toxic to birds, fish and other animals too.<\/p>\n

The effects of long-term human exposure are not as well understood.<\/p>\n

Methomyl has shown to be unlikely as a carcinogen, but harm to the human endocrine system \u201cremains possible,\u201d according to the Department of Pesticide Regulation in its 2015 Risk Characterization.<\/p>\n

In the Salinas Valley, the well-known CHAMACOS study, the longest-running birth cohort study on pesticide exposure in any farming community, reports links between methomyl exposure and possible endocrine disruptions in teenage girls.<\/p>\n

The study, which has followed more than 600 local children since 1999, estimated prenatal exposure to a number of pesticides by linking their mother\u2019s address during pregnancy to California\u2019s pesticide use reporting database.<\/p>\n

Estimated methomyl exposure had a \u201csignificant association\u201d with heavy menstrual bleeding, which the study indicates as a \u201cvital sign\u201d of overall reproductive health.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmong 16-year-old Latina adolescents living in an agricultural region in California (Salinas Valley), we observed significant associations between prenatal exposure to methomyl, a carbamate insecticide, and heavy menstrual bleeding in our single-exposure model,\u201d the study reported.<\/p>\n

A two-fold increase in prenatal methomyl exposure was associated with a 29% increase in the odds of heavy menstrual flow, according to the study.<\/p>\n

While the CHAMACOS authors admit that other research on the associations of methomyl and endocrine disruption in humans is limited, a 2010 study found that mice exposed to the substance experienced disrupted estrous cycle length.<\/p>\n

The Department of Pesticide Regulation in its 2015 Risk Characterization document on methomyl also mentions a 2006 epidemiological study that found an association between neural tube defects in children and exposure, also by linking maternal addresses with pesticide records.<\/p>\n

Still, how much exposure actually happens is uncertain. Local residents have advocated for the Department of Pesticide Regulation to install an air monitor in Salinas.<\/p>\n

Hidalgo said that while he was not familiar with the details of the CHAMACOS study, a \u201ctremendous amount of oversight\u201d goes into issuing permits.<\/p>\n

If high winds are forecasted or if his office receives reports of violations, Hidalgo said his staff can go out to the field and stop an application. Hidalgo said it\u2019s rare for them to do so, however, because applicators typically \u201care pretty conscious\u201d about preventing drift.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a balancing act that we do to keep the community safe through a regulatory program, as well as giving our growers the tools to be able to do what they need to do to control some of the pests,\u201d Hidalgo said.<\/p>\n

Awareness of exposure<\/h4>\n

On windy nights in Greenfield, Martinez used to love to sleep with the windows open. One night last spring she did just that. She woke up with a terrible headache. The headache persisted, then nausea.<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt like I wanted to throw up, but I can\u2019t,\u201d Martinez recalled. \u201cIt was weird. And then it got to me like, OK, let me check what alerts I have.\u201d<\/p>\n

She checked SprayDays and saw that methomyl had been applied on the edge of town earlier that night.<\/p>\n

Martinez reported the incident to the Agricultural Commissioner\u2019s Office but was told that the pesticides were too far away from her address to be the cause.<\/p>\n

Others reporting such incidents have faced the same response, said Martinez.<\/p>\n

Martinez said that with her parents having both worked in the fields, she was used to that kind of uncertainty surrounding the health of her community.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a daughter of farm workers, I knew that (poor) health was affecting my parents and my farm working community, but you never knew what you\u2019re being exposed to,\u201d Martinez said.<\/p>\n

Now at least, Martinez said she and others can begin naming that uncertainty.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t get peace of mind, but you get a feeling of empowerment \u2026 they know that they\u2019re being exposed and now there (are) names. We could call them out. It\u2019s methomyl. It\u2019s 1,3\u2013D. Chloropicrin.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut what are we going to do about it now? We have that information. Let\u2019s go ahead and start reporting these drift incidents because for many years now, they\u2019ve just been sweeping them under the rug.\u201d<\/p>\n
