Do you trust the 2026 San Francisco 49ers?<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the only question that matters when trying to predict the season, and if your answer is an immediate, unhesitating yes, then this column is not for you. There\u2019s no point trying to convert a zealot.<\/p>\n

But I get it: Belief is intoxicating. If you want to be, it\u2019s easy to be convinced that Kyle Shanahan will always find a scheme to save this team, and John Lynch will always have another quality player the Niners can put on the field. Maybe you believe Brock Purdy\u2019s fifth season will be a masterpiece of surgical efficiency.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not here to tell you that faith is impossible. All of those things might be true.<\/p>\n

But I\u2019m also seeing the whole dashboard light up with red lights before the season has even started.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know what this 49ers team is going to be this season. Nobody does, including the men with pads and headsets in Santa Clara.<\/p>\n

What I do know is the math, and it makes it awfully tough to look at this top-heavy roster and a demanding schedule, and comfortably pick them to win 11 or 12 games.<\/p>\n

To forecast that kind of dominance requires assuming a nearly utopian alignment of fate.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

Football doesn\u2019t do utopia. The 49ers certainly don\u2019t do utopia (anymore, at least). No, football is an aggressive, remorseless game of attrition.<\/p>\n

Every Sunday takes a piece of you, whether it\u2019s a meniscus, an ankle, or your ability to get out of bed without aching on a Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n

When a team enters Week 1 on rock-solid ground, it has room for error and injury. It stands a chance of absorbing the inevitable structural damage of an autumn war.<\/p>\n

But a team with this many burning questions in September is already on uneven footing. Because whatever questions you bring into the opener, the league will gleefully double by Halloween.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

Look at the depth chart right now, before a single official whistle blows.<\/p>\n

The left guard spot remains an ongoing turnstile adventure, defensive tackle is a glaring vacancy, and strong-side linebacker is held together by hope.<\/p>\n

And whoo boy, defensive end. Calling that edge rotation a question mark is an insult to punctuation.<\/p>\n

That doesn\u2019t even account for the secondary, where outside corner depth looks like an open-casting call, or a wide receiver room that\u2019s one awkward cut away from panic.<\/p>\n

This is what happens when an organization stops looking for ways to elevate its game and spends five years desperately trying to maintain a status quo.<\/p>\n

It leaves you with a top-heavy roster where the stars must play like superheroes, and the backups must pray they aren\u2019t called upon.<\/p>\n

Just look at the crew holding up the entire enterprise:<\/p>\n

You\u2019re relying on Mike Evans, who brings five straight seasons of persistent hamstring alarms to the Bay.<\/p>\n

You\u2019re banking on Nick Bosa returning to terrifying form after a third career ACL reconstruction.<\/p>\n

You\u2019re asking Fred Warner to anchor everything after missing half of last season, and Dre Greenlaw to be an every-down impact player, despite having spent all of August living on a pitch count.<\/p>\n

Your offense is still totally dependent on Christian McCaffrey, who\u2019s coming off the heaviest single-season workload for any NFL running back since 2014. Well, him and George Kittle, who has miraculously recovered from a torn Achilles tendon suffered this calendar year.<\/p>\n

And you\u2019re asking Trent Williams, at 38 years old, to protect Purdy\u2019s blind side after his body spent the back half of last season creaking like an old floorboard.<\/p>\n

If all six of those dice rolls come up sixes, wonderful. Plan the parade route down Market Street.<\/p>\n

If two of them come up snake eyes, where does this team turn?<\/p>\n

Throw in a schedule that opens on the other side of the planet in Melbourne against the Rams and only gets nastier from there. There are cross-country flights, another international game, brutal physical matchups, and not a single easy week for a team that doesn\u2019t carry much margin for error, if any \u2014 and might have used up all its good fortune last season.<\/p>\n

Could Shanahan scheme this group to 10 wins on pure tactical wizardry alone? Absolutely, we\u2019ve seen him do it before.<\/p>\n

Could Purdy elevate everyone around him and drag this roster kicking and screaming into January? It wouldn\u2019t shock me in the slightest.<\/p>\n

Twelve, even 13 wins, a Super Bowl win? Absolutely in the deck for this team, should the right cards be dealt.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s just hard to bet on a house when the foundation is already showing hairline fractures before the first, inevitable tremor hits.<\/p>\n

Five, six wins? That seems just as likely as the best-case scenario.<\/p>\n

You can pick your angle.<\/p>\n

I can\u2019t. The volatility is too high.<\/p>\n

So let\u2019s cop put and cut the difference: 10-7.<\/p>\n

And then it comes down to which 10 and which 7?<\/p>\n

A tiebreaker feels inevitable for the Niners.<\/p>\n

My recommendation: Survive enough to beat the Cowboys and Vikings in November. Those games are likely to loom large a month later.<\/p>\n
