Again this year, the Alameda County Fairgrounds will host the Scottish Highland Gathering and Games, a celebration of Scottish culture, music and the \u201cheavy\u201d sports that\u2019s been held in the Bay Area since 1866.<\/p>\n

Here are the details on that event and other big Labor Day weekend festivals:<\/p>\n

Scottish Highland Gathering and Games:<\/strong> The Bay Area\u2019s largest celebration of Scottish culture features \u201cheavy athletics\u201d contests such as caber and stone tosses; the Kilted Mile race; heritage exhibits; traditional foods and whisky tastings; sheepdog trials and birds of prey demonstrations; and music including pipe bands, harpists, fiddlers and Celtic rock.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s highlights include:<\/p>\n

\u2014 Actor and martial artist Adrian Paul. The immortal Scottish swordsman Duncan MacLeod of \u201cHighlander: The Series,\u201d will greet fans, sign autographs and lead a special \u201cSword Experience\u201d in the Living History area.<\/p>\n

\u2014 The 2026 Men\u2019s Scottish Heavy Athletics World Championships alongside the 50th annual U.S. Invitational Heavy Athletics Championships.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

\u2014 The participation of 54 clans and Scottish societies.<\/p>\n

Details:<\/strong> 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday-Sunday at the Alameda County Fairgrounds, 4501 Pleasanton Ave., Pleasanton. Tickets, $5.60 to $44.80, must be purchased online at www.thescottishgames.com, either in advance or via QR code at the event. Parking is $15.<\/p>\n

Other Labor Day weekend festivals.<\/p>\n

Kings Mountain Art Fair:<\/strong> More than 100 juried artists from the U.S. and Canada will gather to create a fine-art gallery in the redwoods at this annual event that started in 1963. Live entertainment and food and drink booths will be offered on all three holiday weekend days.<\/p>\n

Proceeds from this volunteer-run event benefit the Kings Mountain Volunteer Fire Brigade and Kings Mountain Elementary School.<\/p>\n

Details:<\/strong> Free admission. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday at 13889 Skyline Blvd., Woodside. Check the kingsmountainartfair.org website for directions, parking info.<\/p>\n

Millbrae Art & Wine Festival:<\/strong> This 55th annual event will feature 200 arts and crafts booths, plus live music and food, and beer and wine vendors. Interactive art workshops are planned, and there will be a children\u2019s activity zone. SamTrans will provide free shuttle service every 20 minutes from the BART station, where weekend parking is free, according to festival sponsors, the Millbrae Chamber of Commerce.<\/p>\n

Details:<\/strong> Free admission. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday-Sunday along Broadway between Victoria and Meadow Glen. www.millbraechamber.com<\/p>\n

Bizerkeley Food Festival:<\/strong> The sixth annual vegan food festival \u2014 Northern California\u2019s largest \u2014 will feature dozens of vendors plus entertainment, games and a children\u2019s activity zone. Organizers note that half of the attendees and vendors every year are not plant-based eaters\/makers.<\/p>\n
