{"id":8435,"date":"2026-09-04T23:08:07","date_gmt":"2026-09-04T23:08:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nextcitydigest.com\/?p=8435"},"modified":"2026-09-04T23:08:07","modified_gmt":"2026-09-04T23:08:07","slug":"that-new-trail-has-a-few-surprises-bay-area-hikers-are-warned","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nextcitydigest.com\/?p=8435","title":{"rendered":"That new trail has a few surprises, Bay Area hikers are warned"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>A trail that opened last week on a long-closed stretch of Bay Area ridgeline has gotten \u201coverwhelming interest\u201d \u2014 and a lot of troubling behavior, the land\u2019s managers report.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/nextcitydigest.com\/?p=8433\">A new California law will ban watering decorative grass, even in non-drought years, starting Jan. 1<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A statement Thursday by the agency that oversees the Skyline Watershed Ridge Trail said that \u201cunfortunately, many trail users are not complying with our access rules,\u201d and it cited several unusual elements of the trail that may be taking hikers, cyclists and equestrians by surprise.<\/p>\n<p>The Peninsula trail\u2019s first big difference is apparent before users even step on the trail: They have to go online to get a permit (which is free and lasts through December) and carry proof of it.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond that, people apparently are not prepared for certain parts of the experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The six-mile trail is out-and-back, with no outlet at the far end and no connection to other trails in the area. Though the trail is never far from Skyline Boulevard (Highway 35), a fence prevents people from accessing it from that road, or vice versa. If you want to get off the trail, the only option is to turn around and go back to the trailhead.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/nextcitydigest.com\/?p=8431\">Review: \u2018Onimusha: Way of the Sword\u2019 modernizes a dormant samurai series<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 There are toilets at miles 2 and 5 but none at the trailhead, and there\u2019s no drinking water.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The parking lot, at Skyline Boulevard and Highway 92, has room for about two dozen vehicles, without much safe and legal parking outside the lot. Also, there are no marked pedestrian crossings on either road.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the trail is expected to continue to be crowded on weekends.
