Lawrence Gowan is deep in the heart of Texas as he joins our Zoom call, raving about the upbeat crowds that have been turning out to see Styx during its dates in the Lone Star State and still buzzing over getting the chance to visit the Buddy Holly Center in lovely Lubbock.<\/p>\n

The vastly talented vocalist-keyboardist comes across every bit as enthusiastic and energetic online as he does on the stage with Styx, the classic-rock act he\u2019s been helping lead ever since Dennis DeYoung was booted from the fold at the end of the \u201890s.<\/p>\n

Gowan, a classically trained pianist who also forged a very successful solo music career in Canada in the \u201880s and \u201890s, made his Styx recording debut with \u201cCyclorama\u201d in 2003 and has been on all of the band\u2019s albums that have followed.<\/p>\n

Of course, these newer offerings don\u2019t get the attention bestowed on the multiplatinum-selling classics \u2014 like 1978\u2019s \u201cPieces of Eight\u201d or 1981\u2019s \u201cParadise Theatre.\u201d Yet, the Styx recordings featuring Gowan \u2014 including last year\u2019s \u201cCircling from Above\u201d \u2014 are all enjoyable and worth the attention of classic rock fans.<\/p>\n

The same can be said for the group\u2019s live show, which I most recently caught back in January and can attest that the 2026 version of Styx \u2014 featuring Gowan, Todd Sucherman (drums, percussion), James \u201cJY\u201d Young (vocals, guitars), Tommy Shaw (vocals, guitars), Terry Gowan (bass, vocals), Will Evankovich (mandolin, guitars) and, in a reduced role, Chuck Panozzo (bass, vocals) \u2014 still rocks.<\/p>\n

Find out for yourself when Styx brings its co-headlining tour with fellow Windy City classic rockers Chicago to Toyota Pavilion at Concord on Sept. 4. Showtime is 7 p.m. and tickets are $24, livenation.com.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s my chat with Gowan.<\/p>\n

Q:<\/strong> Good to hear that the crowds have been treating Styx well in Texas. I\u2019ve always wondered \u2014 and you are in a great position to answer this for me \u2014 are concert audiences noticeably different from region to region?<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

A:<\/strong> I\u2019ve talked about that in the past. Crowds are very different in different parts of the world and even in different states and even in Canada, in different provinces, when we\u2019re playing there. However, crowds start out very different \u2014 very unique to their personality in that area \u2014 but it\u2019s amazing how alike they are by the end of the show. It\u2019s astounding to me.<\/p>\n

Q:<\/strong> So, by the end, everybody\u2019s just rocking out \u2014 no matter the locale.<\/p>\n

A:<\/strong> Yeah, I have observed audiences \u2014 whether we\u2019ve been in England or Sweden or America or Mexico or Japan \u2014 and they\u2019re very different at the beginning. By the end of the show, indistinguishable. It\u2019s amazing to see.<\/p>\n

I could be projecting, but this, to me, is what happens over the arc of a really good rock show and just how effusive people are by the end of the night.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

Q:<\/strong> Sounds like the power of rock \u2018n\u2019 roll in full effect.<\/p>\n

A:<\/strong> I can\u2019t underplay it because my life has been infused with that observation. I mean, as I just mentioned, I was at the Buddy Holly Center. And I\u2019m just knocked out with the fact that this guy only lived until he was 22 years of age and his music has stuck with people. It\u2019s not particularly complex or overly cerebral, I suppose, but yet it has a charm and an immediacy of communication that just is incredibly infectious and stays with people.<\/p>\n

Q:<\/strong> Do you remember the first album you ever owned?<\/p>\n

A:<\/strong> I like telling this one. My piano teacher, when I was like 11-years old, she called me and said, \u201cOh, they\u2019re having a talent contest at a big department store.\u201d So, anyway, it\u2019s about 4 p.m. She said, \u201cIt\u2019s only on until 5 p.m., so if you get over there quick, maybe they\u2019ll let you be in it.\u201d<\/p>\n

So I got on my bike and rode over to the store.<\/p>\n

They let me in and I played and then they polled the audience just by applause \u2014 and I was able to win it.<\/p>\n

But when they told me what the prize was I was blown away. They said, \u201cYou can choose any LP in the store.\u201d<\/p>\n

Q:<\/strong> Oh, that\u2019s a great prize. Did you have a hard time picking which one you wanted?<\/p>\n

A:<\/strong> I already knew what album I wanted and where to find it. The guy in the store was really impressed, because I knew to go up the escalator, turn left, turn right, because that\u2019s where the records are.<\/p>\n

I went straight to the \u201cRevolver\u201d album by The Beatles and plucked that out and kind of went, \u201cCan I have this one?\u201d<\/p>\n

They\u2019re like, \u201cYes, that\u2019s yours.\u201d I couldn\u2019t believe it.<\/p>\n

Q:<\/strong> Like a dream come true.<\/p>\n

A:<\/strong> But when I got home, we didn\u2019t have a record player at that point. So, I put the album up on a high window down in the basement, where (my younger siblings) were too small to reach it, and I said, \u201cOK, that stays there. Don\u2019t touch it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The following summer my parents get this record player and I\u2019m thrilled because it\u2019s time to go play my \u201cRevolver\u201d album from the year before. Of course, it\u2019s been sitting in the window for over a year, so the thing is as warped as you\u2019ve ever seen an album.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m so incredibly shocked at this, but thinking to myself, \u201cI wonder if it\u2019ll still work?\u201d So I put it on and it\u2019s just so bumpy and the needle\u2019s going boing, boing, boing.<\/p>\n

Q:<\/strong> That\u2019s funny. And I had something like that happen to me with Bob Seger\u2019s \u201cLive Bullet,\u201d only it wasn\u2019t me who warped it but somebody else. I remember putting the horribly warped album on the turntable and the needle would launch right off the grooves and into the air. Funny how those early music memories stick with you.<\/p>\n

A:<\/strong> I\u2019ve bought several copies of \u201cRevolver\u201d over the years, but none will ever be as precious as the one that I won.<\/p>\n

Q:<\/strong> Do you have a first memory of hearing Styx?<\/p>\n

A:<\/strong> There was a record store in Toronto called Sam the Record Man and that was very much kind of a real listening post. I would go into that record store three-four times a week, just to kind of look at album covers and listen to whatever the guy at the desk was playing.<\/p>\n

He was like the equivalent of the local disc jockey. He was the arbiter of taste, because whatever he\u2019s kind of already gleaned, having gone through a good number of records, probably during the day when the store is empty, just determined what\u2019s going to be played.<\/p>\n

I remember that I\u2019d heard (Styx\u2019s) \u201cLorelei\u201d and \u201cCrystal Ball\u201d on the radio in Toronto. And I really liked both those songs. I assumed that the band was from England because they had this kind of progressive rock sound and I thought they were just singing with quasi-American accents.<\/p>\n

Q:<\/strong> And I\u2019m guessing you were a big prog rock fan, so Styx had your interest.<\/p>\n

A:<\/strong> I was deeply into Genesis and Yes and Emerson, Lake & Palmer, so they were kind of the next band that came on the horizon of the progressive rock thing.<\/p>\n

One day I\u2019m in the record store and I see the cover for (1977\u2019s) \u201cThe Grand Illusion\u201d and I\u2019m immediately taken by the artwork. And I took the album up to the front of the desk.<\/p>\n

(The store employee) put \u201cGrand Illusion\u201d on, and I heard the opening of that record, and I just thought \u201cwow.\u201d<\/p>\n

Q:<\/strong> And you were hooked \u2014 just like millions of other rock fans at the time.<\/p>\n

A:<\/strong> It piqued my interest and then shortly after that it was ubiquitous \u2014 every radio station was playing Styx in Toronto. It was like Styx radio all the way. You could barely change the channel and not hear a Styx song for the next four years.<\/p>\n

Q:<\/strong> And the next album was another blockbuster \u2014 \u201cPieces of Eight\u201d \u2014 which I saw you and Styx perform in its entirety at the Venetian in Las Vegas earlier this year. The evening served as yet another reminder of the power that can come from hearing a full work of art \u2014 in this case, an album \u2014 from start to finish.<\/p>\n

A:<\/strong> When we play (the album) live, it\u2019s a different audience experience that I\u2019ve witnessed. We\u2019ve all had this experience where we\u2019ve listened to this record usually alone, right? Usually it was a solitary little experience that you had at home, and now you\u2019re sitting with a few thousand people listening to it. It\u2019s a shared experience.<\/p>\n

When you lay an album out in its sequential order, it kind of elevates it to a higher reverence than just playing the songs individually.<\/p>\n

It is a different experience and I\u2019m glad you liked it.<\/p>\n

Q:<\/strong> Because the band had so much success with power ballads and straight-ahead rockers, do you think people sometimes overlook or downplay Styx\u2019s prowess in the prog-rock world?<\/p>\n

A:<\/strong> Really good question. I think the heat of a hit single can categorize a band forever in the general public\u2019s mind. It\u2019s quite possible there are people who know \u201cOwner of a Lonely Heart\u201d by Yes \u2014 which is progressive, but at the same time very much \u201880s and using Trevor Horn\u2019s production \u2014 and not know that the same band would do something like \u201cTales from Topographic Ocean\u201d or \u201cClose to the Edge,\u201d something that\u2019s a much kind of deeper dive, so to speak, into the progressive world.<\/p>\n

Q:<\/strong> That\u2019s probably true of 50 percent of the people who were watching MTV in the first half of the \u201880s. So, I get what you\u2019re saying.<\/p>\n

A:<\/strong> I think that the faithful who come and see Styx shows year after year are completely educated in the depths of how light some of the music can be and just how heavy some of it can be. They know.<\/p>\n

But the general public was quick to categorize things and you could suddenly think that a song like \u201cLady\u201d completely categorizes the band and not realize there are songs like \u201cRenegade,\u201d \u201cThe Grand Illusion\u201d and \u201cGreat White Hope.\u201d<\/p>\n

Q:<\/strong> Zooming ahead quite a few years, but sticking on the prog rock topic, I have to say that the prog is very strong on \u201cCircling From Above.\u201d<\/p>\n

A:<\/strong> First off, I have to say that was the aspect of the band that I was most drawn to when I joined it over 27 years ago now.<\/p>\n

They are prog experiments. Let\u2019s call them that, because that\u2019s what progressive music is supposed to be in a lot of ways. It\u2019s experimental, but, at the same time, still has the potential to be quite commercial. So, it\u2019s that part of the band that I really try to champion. That\u2019s my own little corner, but Tommy (Shaw) and Will (Evankovich), especially, wade into that aspect of the band a lot \u2014 as does Todd (Sucherman) and my brother (Terry Gowan).<\/p>\n

At the same time, you know, you\u2019ll get songs like \u201cOnly You Can Decide,\u201d which is a Tommy song and a straightforward ballad, or \u201cBlue Eyed Raven,\u201d which is very much a folk-influenced song.<\/p>\n

Over all, as you listen to that album, you would feel it\u2019s a progressive rock record that dips into other influences.<\/p>\n

Q:<\/strong> For many of your contemporaries \u2014 classic rock acts that have been around for decades and experienced much success in the \u201870s and \u201880s \u2014 the words \u201cnew material\u201d can be quite taboo. And I get that. There\u2019s just not as much return on investment, so why keep putting out new albums if fans just want to hear the old stuff? But Styx makes new material a priority, as if you\u2019re saying to listeners \u201cWe\u2019re not just a nostalgia act and creating new songs is important to us.\u201d<\/p>\n

A:<\/strong> You couldn\u2019t have put that better, quite honestly. This is Styx\u2019s 54th year of existence now. And there\u2019s never going to be a Styx show where we\u2019re not going to play \u201cCome Sail Away,\u201d \u201cFooling Yourself,\u201d \u201cBlue Collar Man,\u201d \u201cGrand Illusion\u201d and \u2026 I could keep going.<\/p>\n

Those have to be in every show. That\u2019s what most people have bought tickets to hear.<\/p>\n

But as new musical ideas come into our heads, it keeps us engaged. And it\u2019s not about reaching the top of the charts that is driving it. It\u2019s more to do with keeping the audience out there fully engaged in the fact that, \u201cWow, they\u2019re still doing new things, they\u2019re still finding new ways of extending what Styx can explore musically.\u201d<\/p>\n

These are really vitally important things to us, and as long as everyone\u2019s committed to do it and leaning into it then it\u2019s very worthwhile to push on and do it.<\/p>\n
