OAKLEY \u2014 With no challengers coming forward for two council seats on the November ballot, the Oakley City Council canceled the races and reappointed the incumbents to serve another four years in office.<\/p>\n

Mayor Hugh Henderson, who represents District 2, and District 4 Councilmember Shannon Shaw will both serve a second term after a vote during a special meeting Aug. 20.<\/p>\n

Both Henderson and Shaw did not take part in the vote, and Councilmember George Fuller was absent.<\/p>\n

The move saves the city roughly between $31,840 and $49,207 in election costs. The figures are based on the city\u2019s estimated cost of $2.75 to $4.25 per registered voter and the number of voters in District 2 and District 4.<\/p>\n

As of April 3, there are 4,997 voters in District 2 and 6,581 voters in District 4, according to a staff report.<\/p>\n

City Clerk Kim Snodgrass said the nomination period for the Nov. 3 general election closed on Aug. 7, with only one candidate qualified for each open seat.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo individuals have expressed interest in running as a write-in candidate for either district,\u201d Snodgrass said.<\/p>\n

Under state elections code, a city council can appoint a person to a seat when no other candidate is nominated, Snodgrass said.<\/p>\n

In 2024, District 1 Councilmember Aaron Meadows and District 3 Councilmember Anissa Williams also were appointed to their respective seats after facing no challengers in that year\u2019s general election.<\/p>\n
