Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that those close to President Joe Biden should have raised concerns about whether he was mentally fit enough to run for a second term in 2024.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do think that those who did know should have acted upon that information,\u201d the outgoing Bay Area congresswoman said Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Pelosi\u2019s comments about the former president were made at Politico\u2019s \u201cThe California Agenda: Sacramento Summit\u201d \u2014 a one-day gathering of policy and business leaders to discuss the state\u2019s future.<\/p>\n

Here are the biggest takeaways:<\/p>\n

Pelosi revisits Biden\u2019s exit<\/h4>\n

Pelosi denied that she asked Biden to drop out of the race, despite reports from several national outlets that\u00a0the former speaker played a major role in the pressure campaign for him to exit the race. Instead, she said she met with Biden to \u201cquestion the polling\u201d and raise concerns about how his campaign was being conducted.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am not a big believer in polling in terms of who\u2019s ahead in a race, but I believe in understanding what the public is thinking because we represent them so we have to know that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Pelosi also said\u00a0she told Biden that the public \u201cwould like to hear that you\u2019ve had testing that demonstrates that you can serve.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said, \u2018I get tested every day in what I\u2019m doing and the rest of that,’\u201d she recounted. \u201cI said, \u2018I think people want to see something more in that regard.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

Pelosi declined to say who she would support in the next presidential race as speculation builds about Gov. Gavin Newsom and former Vice President Kamala Harris. However, she did chime in on the 2026 midterms, setting a goal for Democrats to flip 30 U.S. House seats from red to blue.<\/p>\n

Hilton on AI\u2019s reputation<\/h4>\n

Former Fox News host and Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton hasn\u2019t shied away from using artificial intelligence in his campaign, having released a number of AI-generated videos on social media mocking his political rivals.<\/p>\n

When asked about the public\u2019s distrust of AI, Hilton blamed OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, saying they have been a \u201cdisaster for the reputation of the industry.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve had tremendous success in terms of their business, but the narrative that they\u2019ve been spinning for years has just been catastrophic for public trust in their own industry,\u201d Hilton said. \u201cThis endless doom laden predictions about what the things that they\u2019re working on are going to do to our economy and our society I think have fed this.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

He added that he believes California is in \u201cdanger of both over and under regulating\u201d the industry \u2014 over regulating when it comes to potential benefits of incorporating it into medicine and using it as a tool to build jobs and under regulating when it comes to child safety as well as the impact on creative fields.<\/p>\n

Becerra\u2019s \u201cPower Hour\u201d<\/h4>\n

Former Health Secretary Xavier Becerra, a Democrat facing off with Hilton in the November governor\u2019s race, announced a new policy proposal at the summit \u2014 a first-in-the-nation plan to give some residents up to two hours of free electricity in the middle of the day.<\/p>\n

Referred to as the \u201cpower hour,\u201d Becerra said low-income families would be eligible and that it would help California shift energy usage away from peak demand times, between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., by incentivizing free electricity earlier in the day. He believes he could institute the proposal in his first year in office.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe produce so much solar energy that oftentimes in the afternoon we can\u2019t make use of all of it,\u201d he said. \u201cIt essentially goes to waste or we ship it off to some other state.\u201d California has also increased its battery power storage capacity in recent years.<\/p>\n

Becerra\u2019s campaign said in a news release that it could help reduce a family\u2019s utility bill by roughly $1,000 a year.<\/p>\n

Bonta, Paramount spar<\/h4>\n

Attorney General Rob Bonta accused Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison of attempting to \u201cblackmail\u201d California regulators by threatening to move operations out of the state amid its antitrust challenge to the Warner Bros. merger.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is an attempt to blackmail the regulators who are daring to enforce the law fairly and firmly, who are daring to stand up for the rule of law, for the free and fair market instead of a rigged market, and for consumers and workers in the industry by moving to block what is unlawful,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Bonta, who\u2019s signaled interest in a future run for governor, is leading a 12-state lawsuit against the entertainment giant,\u00a0 arguing that the merger would \u201cextinguish competition\u201d in Hollywood. The lawsuit is scheduled to go to trial in March.<\/p>\n

The state attorney general said he is \u201cvery happy with where we are\u201d in the litigation and that Paramount is \u201ceager\u201d to enter settlement talks.<\/p>\n

During an interview later in the day, Makan Delrahim, Paramount\u2019s chief legal officer, addressed Bonta\u2019s \u201cblackmail\u201d comments.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis state seems to view this merger in a different market,\u201d he said, noting that 67 other countries had approved it. \u201cYou have to take a look at the business environment and look to see what\u2019s best for not only the community and the business, and ultimately, you know, go to the place where you\u2019re wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n
