Ariana Grande insisted at her concert Monday night that the professional break she\u2019ll soon take was not a \u201cimpulsive\u201d reaction to \u201cnegativity\u201d and speculation about her health \u2014 but an \u201cempowered\u201d decision that was \u201cquietly\u201d planned \u201ca long time ago,\u201d with the expectation that it will lead to the \u201cgreatest experience of my professional and creative life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yes, Grande said a mouthful to her fans at her Eternal Sunshine Tour performance in Chicago. And, a new report Tuesday has offered a translation to her words, pointing to a situation that sounds more dire and less \u201cempowered.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the report in Rob Shuter\u2019s Naughty But Nice Substack, \u201cconcern\u201d about the 33-year-old mega-star has been \u201cgrowing behind the scenes\u201d for quite a while and it\u2019s gotten to the point that her \u201cinner circle\u201d is \u201cquietly exploring exploring treatment options and wellness facilities\u201d for her to check into, once her tour ends Sept. 1.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re looking at what comes next,\u201d a source told Shuter. The priority isn\u2019t another album, another movie, or another show\u2014it\u2019s Ariana. Everyone agrees she needs time away from the spotlight.\u201d<\/p>\n

These sources didn\u2019t comment on whether Grande is exploring treatment for any particular health condition, including an eating disorder. Grande probably won\u2019t offer any specifics herself anytime soon, as she also defiantly said Monday night that boundaries \u201cneed to be set\u201d and that nothing \u201cwill distort my reality.\u201d Grande has previously insisted she\u2019s healthy and described her weight as her own personal business, saying, \u201cI think we should be gentler and less comfortable commenting on people\u2019s bodies, no matter what.\u201d<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, the \u201cWicked\u201d star\u2019s comments about her break being planned \u201ca long time ago\u201d will offer little consolation to the London producers she was working with on mounting a big, splashy and long-planned West End revival of the 1984 Stephen Sondheim musical, \u201cSunday in the Park with George.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grande was set to appear in the show with her \u201cWicked\u201d co-star Jonathan Bailey and begin rehearsals in 2027. But she announced Sunday she\u2019s pulling out of that production \u2014 and she did so suddenly, according to the Daily Mail. Sources told the publication that producers at the Barbican Centre in London only got word of her withdrawal Sunday night \u2014 about an hour before her statement was released about her canceling upcoming professional commitments after her tour.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Barbican (Centre) was informed at 8 p.m. on Sunday,\u201d a source alleged to the Daily Mail on Monday. \u201cIt was all very sudden and has left them in a terrible mess.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shuter reported that doing the Sondheim show in London was a \u201cdream project\u201d for Grande and walking away from it \u201cwasn\u2019t easy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut everyone around Ariana knows there are bigger things than opening night,\u201d a second source told Shuter. \u201cShe has nothing left to prove.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sources stressed to Shuter that no final decisions have been made about what form any \u201cpost-tour support\u201d might take for Grande. But her team \u201cis determined to put her well-being first.\u201d<\/p>\n

Many people out in the world discussing Grande\u2019s thin frame would say it\u2019s about time that her team started putting her well-being first. In fact, her \u201cinner circle\u201d of family and professional managers have been accused of \u201cenabling\u201d the singer\u2019s choices around her health and around her apparent efforts to \u201cglamorize\u201d her thin body image.<\/p>\n

Grande\u2019s appearance has been a topic of \u201cbrutal and clinical\u201d discussion for some time, but the latest flashpoint about her body erupted last week, when she released the video for \u201cPetal,\u201d the title track off her new album. The video is supposed to be a critique of the harmful way women are judged for their appearance, as it casts her an aspiring actress going to auditions and trying to please a panel of male executives with a series of different looks.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a scene in the video where Grande is wearing an-all black, off the shoulder ensemble, and she\u2019s meant to look alluring. But she looks emaciated, with protruding collar and breast bones on display and even emphasized.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis poor woman is possibly dying right in front of us,\u201d actor and activist Jameela Jamil declared on social media. Jamil has been public about her own past struggles with anorexia nervosa and said that Grande\u2019s styling in the video was designed to drawn attention to her thinness and make it seem normal and desirable.<\/p>\n

Other celebrities, writers and experts on eating disorders also have come out to say that Grande \u2014 as one of the biggest celebrities in the world \u201cwith millions of followers who idolize her every move\u201d \u2014 should take accountability for the body imagery she\u2019s pushing out into the culture, as Buzzfeed writer Stephanie Soteriou said. That imagery includes \u201cher disappearing arms and increasingly gaunt face,\u201d Soteriou added.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen somebody has Ariana\u2019s level of influence \u2014 so much so that she has inspired countless lookalikes \u2014 normalizing or glamorizing this kind of imagery becomes, to me, downright irresponsible,\u201d said Soteriou. She reported that Grande has become a fixture on pro-anorexia forums for years, \u201cwith those suffering from disordered eating using the star\u2019s frame as their so-called \u2018thinspiration\u2019 to dangerously restrict their own diets and do serious damage to their bodies as a result.\u201d<\/p>\n

Writer Charli Howard, an advocate for people with eating disorders, also expressed concern about the \u201cappalling\u201d imagery Grande is advocating in the \u201cPetal\u201d video.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it is absolutely appalling, from both a moral and capitalistic standpoint, to have released these videos and an album when this person needs psychiatric help and hospitalization,\u201d Howard wrote on Instagram. Howard also took issue with the people around Grande.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s disappointing is that it takes teams, often hundreds, of people to approve videos like these and get them over the line,\u201d Howard said. \u201cEach and every one of you, including her family and management, are enabling this person and encouraging her illness when she needs help.\u201d<\/p>\n
