Ocean swimmer Erica Fox was killed by a single catastrophic shark bite that fractured her pelvis and severed a major artery before she drowned near Monterey in December, according to a newly released autopsy report.<\/p>\n

The report, released late Wednesday, provides the fullest account yet of the attack. Fox\u2019s body washed ashore north of Santa Cruz six days after she failed to return from a swim near Monterey.<\/p>\n

Chris Lowe, a professor of marine biology and director of the Shark Lab at California State University Long Beach, said the single-bite attack was consistent with his theory that a great white shark mistook Fox for a seal or sea lion.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only explanation we can come up with in cases like this is that the shark made a mistake,\u201d Lowe said Thursday. \u201cIt mistook a person for a seal or a sea lion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lowe said the severity of Fox\u2019s injuries and witness accounts led him to believe she was killed by a large adult white shark, likely about 16 feet long. The autopsy report did not identify the shark\u2019s species or provide the width of its bite.<\/p>\n

Fox, a 55-year-old triathlete, was reported missing after she failed to return with the swim group she co-founded, the Kelp Krawlers. She had been far ahead of more than a dozen swimmers returning to Lovers Point beach in Pacific Grove.<\/p>\n

The U.S. Coast Guard said a driver stopped at an intersection on his way to work called 911 after seeing a shark burst from the water about 100 yards off Lovers Point with what he believed was a person protruding from its mouth. The man said the shark submerged and did not resurface. A second witness also reported seeing a shark breach in the area.<\/p>\n

Fox\u2019s body was found six days later near Wilder Ranch State Park.<\/p>\n

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff-Coroner\u2019s Office determined that Fox died from \u201csharp and blunt force injuries and submersion in water due to a shark attack,\u201d according to the autopsy report.<\/p>\n

Her wetsuit and swimsuit were torn in areas corresponding to her injuries. A semicircle of tooth wounds extended from her knees to her abdomen, and the force of the bite fractured her pelvis in several places. The shark also severed a major artery in her midsection.<\/p>\n

The report did not reveal the width of the bite. Fox, who was 5 feet, 7 inches tall, suffered deep injuries to her right knee, both thighs and abdomen.<\/p>\n

Authorities told Lowe after Fox\u2019s body was found that there was no evidence of defensive wounds, such as bites or scrapes to her hands, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was a big shark,\u201d Lowe said. \u201cI think she was probably knocked unconscious immediately. It was a horrible trauma.\u201d<\/p>\n

The rocky coastline near Lovers Point attracts sea lions, while seals frequent the waters offshore. Both are primary prey for white sharks. Large white sharks migrate from the open Pacific toward the coast beginning in October to feed on marine mammals and typically remain through January.<\/p>\n

Lowe said the water off Lovers Point quickly shifts from shallow to deep, potentially allowing a shark to accelerate toward prey near the surface.<\/p>\n

\u201cSharks are looking up for seals, and they have some area to build up speed as they rush from below,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Shark attacks remain extremely rare. California has recorded 236 since 1950, including 17 fatalities, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Monterey County accounts for 19, tied with Marin and Humboldt counties for the fourth-most statewide, while neighboring Santa Cruz County has recorded 17.<\/p>\n

\u201cThink about how many people we see in the ocean all the time, yet there are very few bites,\u201d Lowe said. \u201cIf you look at the number of boating accidents, the number of people who drown in rip currents, the number of people who are hit by boats and die, those are far higher than we see from shark bites. People get freaked out by the fact that there is an animal out there that can cause them harm. But the chances of getting attacked are far less than 1 in a million.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fox\u2019s death marked the third reported shark encounter at Lovers Point since June 2022, when another Kelp Krawler, Steve Bruemmer, was bitten and seriously injured while swimming. Two months later, a paddleboarder and his dog were thrown into the water but escaped unhurt after a shark bit their board from below in the same area.<\/p>\n

Before Fox, the last fatal shark attack in the Monterey Bay area occurred May 9, 2020. Ben Kelly, 26, was surfing about 100 yards offshore at Manresa State Beach, roughly 4 miles south of Aptos in Santa Cruz County, while he was bitten by a 10- to 12-foot great white shark. Authorities said the bite severed an artery in his leg. He was helped back to the beach but died a short time later.<\/p>\n

Fox co-founded the Kelp Krawlers, whose members waded into the water at Lovers Point beach every Sunday morning for a mile-long loop along the coastline, swimming among kelp and starfish.<\/p>\n

She enjoyed the open ocean so much that she told her husband, Jean-Francois Vanreusal, \u201cI\u2019m a fish!\u201d She competed in the Escape from Alcatraz swim 19 times and often finished on the podium, he said in a December interview while she was still missing.<\/p>\n

Fox knew swimming in the open ocean posed some danger but considered it \u201ca minimal risk,\u201d her husband said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only comfort I find is that Erica was every Sunday here, excited to go in the water,\u201d Vanreusal said. \u201cShe really passed in the place she loved.\u201d<\/p>\n

After the attack, Lowe spoke with members of the Kelp Krawlers and advised them that they could reduce their risk by swimming in shallower water closer to shore.<\/p>\n

Members of the Kelp Krawlers were not immediately available Thursday morning. In the wake of the attack, club member Lisa Jensen said the group\u2019s experienced swimmers, including Fox, viewed themselves as visitors in the sharks\u2019 home.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe love the ocean,\u201d Jensen said.<\/p>\n

She described Fox as \u201can incredibly cheerful, bubbly, funny, joyful, kind human being\u201d who was \u201calways out leading the pack.\u201d<\/p>\n
