Following its Bay Area premiere last weekend at San Jose Stage, the film has eight Bay Area screenings Friday through Aug. 8 before a national release. It\u2019s expected to get its broadcast premiere this fall on PBS.<\/p>\n<p>Among his many groundbreaking accomplishments, Valdez is credited with pioneering Chicano-themed film and stage arts and broadening mainstream popular culture by bringing Chicano characters and themes to the stage and screen. Among his best-known works are the 1979 play \u201cZoot Suit,\u201d the first Chicano-penned stage work to show on Broadway, and which he later adapted for the big screen; and the 1987 film \u201cLa Bamba,\u201d a biography of Chicano rock star Richie Valens starring Lou Diamond Phillips.<\/p>\n<p>Valdez also founded and directed the influential Chicano theater company El Teatro Campesino in San Juan Bautista, which was founded with support from Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers in 1965 and is still running today.<\/p>\n<p><span><iframe allowfullscreen=\"true\" class=\"youtube-player\" height=\"360\" loading=\"lazy\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MXESsS8Uskc?version=3&amp;rel=1&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;fs=1&amp;hl=en-US&amp;autohide=2&amp;wmode=transparent\" style=\"border:0;\" width=\"640\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Valdez was born in Delano, the second of 10 children to migrant farmworker parents. He graduated from James Lick High School in San Jose and was a student at San Jose State University when he wrote two of his earliest works, \u201cThe Theft\u201d (1961) and \u201cThe Shrunken Head of Pancho Villa\u201d (1963) which was staged by the San Jose State drama department.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, Valdez has received such honors as the Presidential Medal of the Arts and the George Peabody Award.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerican Pachuco\u201d was directed by David Alvarado, who\u2019s also known for his 2017 documentary \u201cBill Nye: Science Guy.\u201d It reportedly contains never-before-seen footage from El Teatro Campesino \u2014 much of it taken during the historic Delano Grape Strike \u2014\u00a0that was in danger of deteriorating beyond use.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/nextcitydigest.com\/?p=5836\">Tech company buys South Bay campus in deal that could enable expansion<\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The documentary also features interviews with Valdez, Edward James Olmos (who narrates portions of the film as well), Dolores Huerta, Cheech Marin, Lou Diamond Phillips, Taylor<br \/>\nHackford, and Linda Ronstadt.<\/p>\n<p>After its Sundance run, \u201cAmerican Pachuco\u201d received\u00a0 the film festival\u2019s Audience Award for U.S. Documentary and Festival Favorite Award. In November 2025, the film received the Library of Congress Lavine\/Ken Burns Prize for Film, which included a $200,000 grant. Filmmaker Burns praised the documentary and said it \u201cilluminates a figure whose career in the arts broke down barriers,\u201d according to the U.S. Library of Congress.<\/p>\n<p>Now it is set for a week\u2019s worth of screenings in San Jose, San Francisco and Elmwood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a theater rooted in the heart of San Jose, we\u2019re honored to celebrate an artist whose story is<br \/>\ninseparable from the cultural history of our vibrant region,\u201d said Randall King, artistic director,<br \/>\nSan Jose Stage Company, where the film is slated for three more showings. \u201cTheatre legend Luis Valdez forever transformed the landscape of American theatre.
