SANTA CLARA \u2014 There are coaches in the NFL who carry with them a bizarre reputation.<\/p>\n

They\u2019re called whisperers.<\/p>\n

And, frankly, no one really knows what that means.<\/p>\n

Players that you coach at a position consistently perform, perhaps even above public expectation? Congrats, now you\u2019re now a whisperer. Put it on the top of your resume \u2014 everyone else will.<\/p>\n

Kyle Shanahan is a quarterback whisperer. That one we can explain with some confidence: His scheme gets receivers crazy open, keeps linebackers guessing, and makes reads easier and windows wider for his signal callers.<\/p>\n

Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski is considered a tight ends whisperer\u00a0\u2014 he has an eye for the position and his offensive scheme always highlights their talents.(Stefanski prefers to call himself an \u201caficionado\u201d of the position, but who isn\u2019t?)<\/p>\n

And Niners\u2019 first-year defensive backs coach Raheem Morris? Well, he has a reputation of being a \u201csecondary whisperer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Whatever that means.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

Morris isn\u2019t whispering sweet nothings to defensive backs, but he sure seems to have boasted good secondaries everywhere he goes.<\/p>\n

Is that just because he inherits great talent, or is he doing something different, something special?<\/p>\n

Niners training camp is in its early days, and boy, there\u2019s a lot of stuff happening with this team, but I also think we\u2019re starting to see the manifestation of Morris\u2019 methods for maximizing talent on the back-end.<\/p>\n

Renardo Green has all the physical tools to be an elite, lock-down corner in this league. He\u2019s also got a habit of floating into the ether mid-game, forgetting plays, assignments, or just taking off reps. He\u2019s a coaster. And before he reached the NFL, his talent allowed that to be an acceptable way to play.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

That is no longer the case.<\/p>\n

We saw the boiling point in Seattle last January when Shanahan nearly popped a blood vessel screaming at Green on the sideline after pulling him from the game. (The cornerback just stared into the half-distance while the dressing down happened.)<\/p>\n

But in 2026, with Morris installing five-man fronts that leave corners stranded on island coverage, Green can\u2019t just be an athletic hypothesis anymore.<\/p>\n

Last year, defensive coordinator Robert Saleh wanted to run some of the things Morris plans on running this season. That plan was abandoned because of injuries, yes, but also, to a degree, because Green couldn\u2019t be trusted to be the linchpin of the defensive secondary in complicated man-match zone tactics.<\/p>\n

Morris finding a way to unlock Green is one of the most important stories for the Niners this season.<\/p>\n

And Morris might have just done that by finding Green\u2019s replacement.<\/p>\n

Enter Jack Jones, someone who also has a reputation that proceeds him.<\/p>\n

The fifth-year pro is 100 percent aggressive, 100 percent of the time, taking wild gambles that result in either pick-sixes or soul-crushing defensive breakdowns.<\/p>\n

\u201cJack Jones has been known as a playmaker, he\u2019s also been known to give up some, right?\u201d Morris said Monday. That\u2019s the succinct way of putting it, to be sure.<\/p>\n

The Niners signed Jones to a dirt-cheap $1.2 million contract that accounts for less than half a percent of the salary cap. If the Niners cut Jones tomorrow, the accounting department wouldn\u2019t even notice until mid-September.<\/p>\n

But his mere presence in Santa Clara has clearly lit a fire under Green\u2019s rear end. For the first time since he became a starter on the cornerback depth chart, Green isn\u2019t entitled to his gig just because of his draft pedigree.<\/p>\n

Suddenly, in early training camp practices, Green is punching at footballs and getting physical with receivers \u2014 even Mike Evans \u2014 in routine 11-on-11 drills.<\/p>\n

Panic is a hell of a motivator.<\/p>\n

The NFL loves to market itself as a ruthless meritocracy, but that\u2019s mostly corporate propaganda. Usually, draft capital and money dictate playing time, with ties going to the expensive guy, and hand-picked players getting the benefits of the doubt from coaches.<\/p>\n

Morris doesn\u2019t care about any of that stuff because he didn\u2019t build this roster. He inherited a defense assembled, in large part, by Saleh, meaning he has zero emotional attachment to anyone\u2019s high-round draft stock.<\/p>\n

For him, the best player will get the job. Green, Jones, even veteran Eli Apple, who might be keeping Jones in line with strong early play \u2014 no one should doubt for a second that any of the three could start opposite Deommodore Lenoir against the Rams in Australia Sept. 11.<\/p>\n

This \u201ccompetition\u201d stuff is not just coachspeak for Morris.<\/p>\n

And if you look back on Morris\u2019 career, a pattern of creating the right environment to bring out the best in secondary players shows itself.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt really feels like a great problem,\u201d Morris said when assessing his defensive back room depth.<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s not a problem for Morris \u2014 it\u2019s a feature, not a bug. That said, it\u2019s an existential crisis for a third-year corner who thought his spot was secured.<\/p>\n

This might just be what Morris from previous Niners defensive coordinators. Saleh built a cozy family system\u00a0\u2014\u00a0he had so much say with the defensive roster, particularly before last season, that his ego was too intertwined with player usage. Steve Wilks, on the other hand, was in a competition of himself against the world. Nick Sorensen? Well, he just felt like an exercise in the Peter Principle.<\/p>\n

Morris creates chaotic, high-stakes environments that forces players to sink or swim. He isn\u2019t fixing technique with a chalkboard epiphany, though he\u2019s no slouch at the X\u2019s and O\u2019s, either. No, he\u2019s fixing focus issues with a cheap, aggressive mercenary.<\/p>\n

Jones provides the threat, Green gets the message, and suddenly he\u2019s as engaged as his understudy.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery single day he is showing up in a big way,\u201d Morris said of Green. \u201cNow it\u2019s time to go out there and do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s early August, and camp hype always sizzles in the summer sun before it burns out. Green\u2019s newfound intensity could merely be an early flash that vanishes by August, much less September.<\/p>\n

Or it could be the start of something genuinely special.<\/p>\n

But if Morris actually turns a hypothetical, unquestionably inconsistent talent into a lockdown corner by hiring the right chaos agent to stand behind him, that won\u2019t be an accomplishment that should be discussed in whispers.<\/p>\n
