{"id":5659,"date":"2026-07-28T12:38:06","date_gmt":"2026-07-28T12:38:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nextcitydigest.com\/?p=5659"},"modified":"2026-07-28T12:38:06","modified_gmt":"2026-07-28T12:38:06","slug":"carly-simon-reveals-parkinsons-diagnosis-ahead-of-new-album","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nextcitydigest.com\/?p=5659","title":{"rendered":"Carly Simon reveals Parkinson\u2019s diagnosis ahead of new album"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>Carly Simon has Parkinson\u2019s disease, the singer revealed Monday, explaining her recent absence from public life.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/nextcitydigest.com\/?p=5657\">Separate crashes in South Bay leave three dead<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo many people have written to me, kindly wondering about my relative silence, asking how I am and what I have been doing,\u201d the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer said in a statement to the Daily News. \u201cThe truth is, I\u2019ve been learning how to live with Parkinson\u2019s disease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The learning curve is steep, said Simon, 83.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has taken me some time to understand the diagnosis, to adjust to it, and to decide how much I wanted to say about it publicly,\u201d she continued. \u201cParkinson\u2019s is different for everyone, and it can be unpredictable. Some days I\u2019m so tired I can\u2019t get the day moving at all. On others, it gives me a little more room to move, think, work, and feel like myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Simon had been largely out of the public eye since 2019. She said her diagnosis came after arthritis-induced joint replacements in a hip and both knees did not address her growing stiffness and mobility issues. That sent her to the Mayo Clinic, where tests revealed the diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p>The effects of the nervous system disorder go beyond its hallmark tremors, movement and balance issues to include \u201canxiety, depression, exhaustion and apathy,\u201d hitting not only the physical ability to move but also the will to do so, Simon said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe apathy is particularly strange,\u201d Simon said. \u201cYou can find yourself lying there like a starfish drying in the sun, arms pointing in all directions, while nothing inside is telling you to get up, read, watch, write, sing, call someone, or do much of anything at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/nextcitydigest.com\/?p=5656\">Horoscopes July 28, 2026: Sally Struthers, embrace people, places and projects<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As all this was going on \u2014 Simon did not say when she was first diagnosed \u2014 the \u201cYou\u2019re So Vain\u201d singer also contended with basal cell carcinoma, a form of skin cancer, on her face.<\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe cancer was removed, but the surgery affected my appearance and made me more self-conscious about being seen in public,\u201d which \u201cgave my inner critic quite a lot of new material,\u201d given her lifelong self-consciousness about her appearance, she said. Seclusion proved to be \u201cthe most palatable reaction\u201d as she reconfigured her life, processed the emotional impact and recovered from surgery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I have not stopped living, and I have not stopped working,\u201d Simon said. That work has culminated in a new album, her first original release since 2008, consisting partly of \u201csongs and fragments of songs that had been waiting for me, some for years. There were melodies, verses, and ideas written down and tucked away for some unknown future when I would have the time and attention to finish them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cComes in Waves\u201d will be released on Aug. 14.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMusic has always known when to arrive,\u201d the Grammy- and Oscar-winning musician said. \u201cIt has rescued me more times that I can count.
