In addition to a benefit performance by \u201cLaw & Order: Special Victims Unit\u201d star Mariska\u00a0Hargitay, audiences at TheatreWorks Silicon Valley\u2019s 23nd annual New Works Festival will be able to view the evolution of five \u00a0plays and musicals, as playwrights and composers revise and refine their shows during the festival.<\/p>\n

Hargitay, half-sister of TheatreWorks Artistic Director Giovanna Sardelli, will give three performances of the solo show\u00a0\u201cEvery Brilliant Thing\u201d on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 7-8, to benefit TheatreWorks and\u00a0Joyful Heart Foundation, founded by Hargitay to support survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse.<\/p>\n

Set for Aug. 7-16 at Lucie Stern Theatre in Palo Alto, the 2026 New Works Festival includes readings of \u201cRoja\u201d by Jaime Lozano and Tommy Newman, \u201cThe Tell Tale Heart\u201d by Carlos Aguirre and \u201cRap Monologues\u201d by Austin Dean Ashford. The shows are retellings of, respectively, \u201cLittle Red Riding Hood,\u201d Edgar Allen Poe\u2019s classic horror story and works by Shakespeare.<\/p>\n

\u201cFloor 37\u201d\u00a0by Margot Melcon and\u00a0\u201cRE\u2013\u201c\u00a0by\u00a0Kimber Lee will also be given readings during the festival.<\/p>\n

\u201cVienna,\u201d a new musical from \u201cCome From Away\u201d creators Irene Sankoff and David Hein, makes a return appearance at this year\u2019s festival after being given a reading last year. TheatreWorks\u2019 production of \u201cCome From Away\u201d shattered box office records this spring, making it the highest grossing musical produced by the company in its 56-year history.
\nCast members from that production will join Sankoff and Hein on Aug. 14 for \u201cCut From Away,\u201d a fundraiser showcasing the songs, stories and characters that were cut from\u00a0\u201cCome From Away\u201d\u00a0before it made its Broadway debut.<\/p>\n

All festival performances are at the\u00a0Lucie Stern Theatre, 1305 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto. Tickets for \u201cEvery Brilliant Thing\u201d are $270-$400; \u201cCut From Away\u201d tickets are $125-$250. Festival passes for the five staged readings are $90-$95 at theatreworks.org\u00a0or\u00a0 877-662-8978.<\/p>\n
