Because I know LeBron James won\u2019t be tossing it into the air before his first home game at Chase Center.<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t choose the Golden State Warriors.<\/p>\n

What a shock.<\/p>\n

Despite the Warriors operating with a pathetic sense of self-mortification \u2014 bending over backward for the mere possibility the King might grace them with his presence \u2014 the power of friendship wasn\u2019t enough to lure James to the Bay. He is instead signing with the Philadelphia 76ers, James and his agency, Klutch Sports, announced Friday.<\/p>\n

A positive basketball fit couldn\u2019t seal the deal.<\/p>\n

James, after all, remains one of the most famous men on the planet. He calls his own shots. He has better, far more lucrative things to consider than hanging with his buddies \u2014 they\u2019ll be around after retirement, whenever that might come. He\u2019ll send a jet for them.<\/p>\n

Sure, playing with his buddy Draymond Green sounded like a hoot. Running alongside Stephen Curry and maybe even Jimmy Butler has an undeniable appeal.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

Steve Kerr\u2019s motion offense is the right kind of puzzle for a basketball genius \u2014\u00a0an intellectual sandbox for a guy who sees the floor in four dimensions.<\/p>\n

But other options held entirely too much sway.<\/p>\n

The narrative held too much sway. This way was cleaner \u2014 recency bias won\u2019t be his enemy, but his friend.<\/p>\n

A near-peerless career with a nice, tidy bow placed on top.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

Even in this cynical world, you can\u2019t help but appreciate that.<\/p>\n

So where does this incredibly predictable rejection leave Golden State?<\/p>\n

Frankly, it doesn\u2019t change a thing.<\/p>\n

The Dubs went all-in on James as their magical missing piece. They bet the house on a fantasy.<\/p>\n

Crucially, they offered absolutely no alternative route to improvement when he inevitably looked elsewhere.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s an arrogant or ignorant way to do business. Perhaps it\u2019s both. The Warriors contain multitudes.<\/p>\n

But much like the Jonathan Kuminga debacle last season, the front office refused to take proper stock of reality or stand up for itself. They operated in the dark, armed with nothing but blind hope and a misplaced sense of exceptionalism.<\/p>\n

Now, again, they\u2019re left holding an extraordinarily expensive, completely empty bag.<\/p>\n

At least James had the decency to make his decision in July. We could be dragging this exhausting media circus out until September.<\/p>\n

But even now, the free agency well is dry. James was the last serious, season-altering piece left on the board.<\/p>\n

And, in turn, the Warriors literally added no one, save for two draft picks, to a depressing roster that scraped together 37 measly wins last year.<\/p>\n

They\u2019ll also be without Moses Moody and Butler for significant chunks of the upcoming campaign.<\/p>\n

How\u2019s that for maximizing Curry\u2019s final years of greatness?<\/p>\n

How exactly does this patchwork roster provide \u201cmeaningful basketball?\u201d<\/p>\n

Spoiler alert: It doesn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

So now it\u2019s sell time for Mike Dunleavy, Joe and Kirk Lacob, and the Big Blue PR Machine.<\/p>\n

(As if it ever turned off.)<\/p>\n

The Warriors will go right back to their ol\u2019 standby: droning on and on about \u201coptionality.\u201d They\u2019ll brag to anyone who will listen about their supposed ability to pivot and make a big move.<\/p>\n

Now, that mythical move will be presented as a trade deadline miracle. It\u2019s the Dubs\u2019 biannual cycle of delusion.<\/p>\n

They talk a massive game about the deadline, do absolutely nothing of consequence (save for the Butler trade, which was basically a going-out-of-business sale by the Heat), and then make the exact same hollow claims heading into the offseason.<\/p>\n

Rinse, repeat.<\/p>\n

We are now entering the fourth grueling season of this cycle. At some point, even the most blindly optimistic fans are going to figure out the grift.<\/p>\n

What good is optionality if you never actually act on it?<\/p>\n

What do the Warriors genuinely plan to do with all this hoarded dry powder?<\/p>\n

James wouldn\u2019t have appreciably changed the title math for Golden State this upcoming season anyway.<\/p>\n

He is still a phenomenal player, but at 41 years old, he\u2019s a floor-raiser, not a ceiling-raiser.<\/p>\n

But let\u2019s be totally honest: these Warriors desperately needed their floor raised.<\/p>\n

They won 37 games last year. Doesn\u2019t a 45-win season sound downright heavenly right now?<\/p>\n

It might even keep them out of the dreaded, embarrassing play-in tournament.<\/p>\n

Was that moderate upside worth the monumental challenge of trading for Anthony Davis and paying his exorbitant salary \u2014 Klutch Sports\u2019 clear directive to the Dubs?<\/p>\n

Fiscally, it probably made sense for a team desperate for the omnipresent attention it once had.<\/p>\n

From a basketball perspective? Probably not.<\/p>\n

So, at the very least, I can appreciate the front office\u2019s prioritization there.<\/p>\n

But eventually, the Warriors have to start acting like the franchise they believe themselves to be\u00a0\u2014 elite, superior, and top-tier.<\/p>\n

At some point, bravado needs to be backed up.<\/p>\n

That means occasionally opening itself to making an error of commission. That\u2019s vastly preferable to their endless, agonizing string of errors of omission.<\/p>\n

Conservatism has absolutely no place in the modern NBA.<\/p>\n

This is a star-driven league where one player can change everything \u2014 provided that player\u2019s market research doesn\u2019t include the Googling of \u201cBest Hair Colorists San Francisco.\u201d<\/p>\n

No, in this league, aggression \u2014 ruthless aggression, even \u2014 is the only viable path forward.<\/p>\n

Sure, there is an inherent risk. But that\u2019s the only way you get the reward.<\/p>\n

Warriors ownership has certainly learned that lesson in the other lucrative areas of their business. They didn\u2019t build a \u201csports and entertainment\u201d empire by playing it safe.<\/p>\n

You would like to think there\u2019s enough hard evidence to apply those same lessons to the actual basketball product. You can probably name them off the top of your head.<\/p>\n

And yet, here we are.<\/p>\n

Right back where we started from.<\/p>\n
